Dmitry Merezhkovsky, who escaped from Russia in December 1919, and Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who was expelled from the USSR in February 1974, both sent warning signs to the West, denounced its blindness and called for a moral awakening. For the two writer-publicists, communist ideology was absolute Evil, against which they called on Westerners to resist morally and spiritually (Merezhkovsky and Solzhenitsyn) or militarily (Merezhkovsky), placing ethics above economic or political considerations. A book by Wladimir Drabovich, a Russian psychologist living in France, Fragility of Liberty and Seduction of Dictatorships (1934) helps to understand, in terms of social psychology, the ideological blindness deplored by Merezhkovsky as well as by Solzhenitsyn.

The present article attempts to highlight the “ethos” within the works of Yuri Lotman. I argue that his texts are marked by a specific axiological position that can best be described as that of a representative of the Russian intelligentsia during late socialism. In his research, Lotman defended the sovereignty of the individual against the power of the state and social structures. The same approach is also reflected in the idea of the “explosion” which Lotman developed during the last period of his life. It was his way of underscoring the charisma of cultural heroes and the exceptional character of their actions. A very similar orientation can be observed in the testimonies and memories of Lotman’s former students and colleagues: they create an image of an ideal representative of the academic intelligentsia who, as a person, combined extraordinary intellectual capacities as well as absolute moral integrity.
