The article focuses on the reception and rethinking of “nihilism” in late Soviet culture, especially in the 30 years between Stalin’s death and the beginning of Gorbachev's reforms. On the one hand, the nihilism of the 1860s (especially Pisarev’s) was formally considered a precursor to leftist Marxist ideology. But Soviet censorship was sensitive to possible direct allusions and projections and very carefully blocked attempts to compare critics of tsarist Russia to critics of present-day reality (in Tvardovsky’s Novyj Mir, for example, or in the work of Alexander Yanov). On the other hand, from the mid-1960s onwards, criticism of contemporary “Western nihilism” as an anarchist or left-radical twin of the 1968 protests became increasingly active in the Soviet censored press. As a result, by the early 1980s, there emerged a group of conservatives (though not mainstream) critics (Yuri Davidov, a well-known critic of the Frankfurt School, Alexander Mikhailov, a specialist in German thought, and the literary critic Irina Rodnyanskaya) who considered any radicalism to be “nihilism” and “Nietzscheanism”. The article explores the origins and influences of these ideological currents within Soviet society.

The present article attempts to highlight the “ethos” within the works of Yuri Lotman. I argue that his texts are marked by a specific axiological position that can best be described as that of a representative of the Russian intelligentsia during late socialism. In his research, Lotman defended the sovereignty of the individual against the power of the state and social structures. The same approach is also reflected in the idea of the “explosion” which Lotman developed during the last period of his life. It was his way of underscoring the charisma of cultural heroes and the exceptional character of their actions. A very similar orientation can be observed in the testimonies and memories of Lotman’s former students and colleagues: they create an image of an ideal representative of the academic intelligentsia who, as a person, combined extraordinary intellectual capacities as well as absolute moral integrity.
