The paper elucidates some episodes from the life of Gustave-Euphranor Marin-Darbel (1802-1878), who was born in France and lived thirty years in Russia (1824-1854). He became renown first of all as home teacher of Prince Ivan Gagarin (1814-1854). Later Prince Gagarin became a Russian diplomat in Paris. He converted to Catholicism, entered the Society of Jesus and finally wrote a lot of important compositions on the connections between Russia and the West. The paper is based upon unpublished documents located in the archive of the Third Department of the Emperor’s Chancellery (GARF) and in the archive of the French Jesuits in Vanves. The paper shows Marin-Darbel as a victim of suspicions from the Russian Secret Police, as an author of the project for the reform of education in Russia (the project was presented to the Emperor Nicolas I), as a plague doctor during the cholera epidemic in Russia, and as a lifelong correspondent of his pupil Prince Ivan Gagarin.

Astolphe de Custine visited Russia in 1839, the year when the 25th anniversary of the victory of 1814 was celebrated. That is why the theme of 1812 appears in the text of La Russie en 1839 and it helps Custine to emphasize once again the defects of the Russians such as hypocrisy and cruelty. It becomes quite explicit in the Appendix of the book which is an important part and supposed to remain in the reader's memory, like all the extracts placed at the end of any text. In the Appendix, we can read two stories of French prisoners in Russia in 1812. Both are presented as truthful and registered by the author straight from their heroes. However, it turns out that, first, the two narrators are unreliable and secondly, in his descriptions of the horrors of captivity, Custine didn't rely on eyewitness accounts but on books or more exactly one book, written by Philippe de Ségur, whom he also quotes explicitly in La Russie in 1839 but in other cicumstances. This book relates the sufferings of free French soldiers retreating towards the Russian border but not those of French prisoners. If Custine used quotations from Ségur, a clever compiler called Jean-Juste-Etienne Roy later used quotes from Custine himself to embroider a story of captivity, which up to now researchers in Russia have believed to be a true story. The two depictions at the end of the article show the parallels between Segur and Custine as well as Custine and Roy.
