The article is a study of the influence of Swedish freemasonry on the formation of Russian masonry. More specifically, it treats the genesis of higher order masonry in Russia, and in connection with this the reception of Emmanuel Swedenborg's religious teachings, which were seminal in the early development of Swedish masonry. The history of Russian masonry according to the Swedish system‚ is an almost unknown chapter in the Russian-Swedish political relations during the reign of Catherine the Great (1762-1796). The experience of the inoculation of the Swedish system into Russian masonry helped to reveal a social and intellectual stratification at the heart of Russian culture at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th. This process came to define the principal traits of the relations between the Russian court and the nobility in the course of subsequent Russian history. The study also points to another interesting fact, namely that the Russian masonic works can be seen as an original contribution to the idea of a common and universal language in Europe at that time, an idea that was conceived on the basis of the tradition of Christian hermeneutics.

(Illustrations p. 246-249). The article is devoted to an aspect rather neglected by Russian masonic studies: the provincial masonry. It traces the history of the two lodgeswhich followwed one another in Simbirsk (now Ulyanovsk): Golden Crown, which was founded in 1784 by the prominent Rosicrucian Ivan Petrovich Turgenev (1752-1807), a great translator of theological books and masonic treaties ; and The Key to Virtue , which was opened in 1817 by Prince Mikhail Barataev (1734-1789). The author recounts the activity of this lodge and precise under what conditions it had to stop its work. An appendix describes the last years of A. F. Labzin in Simbirsk, where he had been relegated in 1822 and where he died. (Illustrations p. 246-249).

The article describes the amazing destiny of Russian freemason Yakov Ivanovich of Saint-Glin (1726-1864), born in Moscow, the son of a French nobleman. Protected by admiral A. G. Spiridov and Prince N. B. Repnin, he was initiated in Freemasonry as soon 1793 in Revel. Received in 1809 within the Chapter of the Phoenix, he was then affiliated with the lodge Peter to the Truth. He was instructed by the Minister of Police to keep a watch on masonic lodges. Emperor Alexander I totally trusted him. He asked him to keep a close eye on Astreya. Saint-Glin played a leading role in the arrest of Count Michael Speransky in March 1812. He, especially, led the dignitary in exile. At the end of his long life, in the early sixties of nineteenth Century, the former head of the Secret Police «had become a living relic of the Age of Catherine the Great.»

The paper is devoted to the Russian military lodge St George the Victorious (1817-1818) which worked in Maubeuge (North-France), then general headquarters of the Russian occupying forces under the command of Count Mikhail Vorontsov, according to the Treaty of Paris (Nov. 1815). After studying the composition of the lodge, the author attempts to consider the military lodge in a double context: on one hand, he examines the relations between Rusian freemasons and Belgian and French lodges; on the second hand he tries to value the perception of this lodge in Russia.

A persistent legend wants the imperial power to be the one that introduced the freemasonry in Russia. The Czars actually kept a wary eye on the growth of the Craft, for they believed that its activities would disturb public order based upon autocracy and serfdom. But the masons showed enough loyalty to discourage the younger, who then rejoined the decembrists, whose ancestors were rather often high officials in duty with trade or important merchants.

The author explores the reorganization of the Russian Freemasonry elaborated by A. M. Kolubyakin in 1910 and the birth of the Grand Orient of Russia's Peoples.

The study attempts to rediscover the decisive influence on Russian culture of Mikhail Kheraskov, a poet, playwright, novelist and administrator of the University of Moscow Mikhail Kheraskov. The author demonstrates his direct influence on the destiny and on the works of figures as diverse as Gavriil Derzhavin and Nikolay Novikov. The study breaks decisively with the misrepresentation of Kheraskov that carried the Soviet literary history, which systematically minimized the importance of this prominent writer and man of culture.

Dedicated to the study The Russian proverbs (1782) attributed to Nikolaj Novikov, the article analyzes the masonic dimension in one of these stories and also, more broadly, the innovative Novikov's approach. Novikov indeed rejected the usual exegesis of proverbs, specific to Western paremiographic tradition, but considered this unit in close link with the speech in order to observe the rich and various discourse values. The innovative Novikov's approach of Proverbs is based on the Quest of the Lost Word (Verbum Dimissum).

Based on Micromégas, Dmitriev-Mamonov’s philosophical tale Dvorjanin-filosof (1769), turns Voltaire’s account of a cosmic trip into the depiction of a walk in a garden on a Russian estate. This scale reduction allows the Russian writer to develop two major masonic metaphors : the temple construction and the initiatory deambulation around the lodge, both of which are analyzed in full details in the present paper.

While attempting to bring our thinking in terms of method, we focuse on the role of the "esoteric" component in the Zamyatin's novel We (1921), which we see, in the light of our previous works, as the paradigm of Russian modernism. We relate this novel to the literary tradition and we show how the "mathematics" and "guematria," while they contradict each other, combine to create a specifical stylistico-symbolic dynamics, that is typical for a certain type of modernist writing.

In this article the actions and places of crossing and passing from this world to « other » world is under investigation, where Luzhin’s life to his disappearance from this world is understood as a way of initiation. The decoding of the text explores Luzhin’s five escapes in the polygenetic context of Biblical, Gnostic, Kabbalistic and mythological ideas, and by means of intertextual images of the (foot)path, the tower, the river and the frozen lake by Dante, discovers a concept of death by Nabokov by reading the end of the novel not as the suicide of the protagonist. In the process of interpretation of the multiple symbols of the novel the analyse reveals a parallel of Nabokov’s method and that of freemasons – creation of a system of codes for an élite, a system that demands an infinite process of deciphering, while the reader becomes an “initiated” disciple.
