Dmitri Kontchalovski (1878-1952) arrived in Paris in 1947 as a refugee of the second wave of Russian emigration. He lived in Russia under the Bolsheviks and suffered the fate of those who refused any sort of compromise. As he experienced war, revolution, great poverty under the Bolsheviks, and the DP camps after the war, his philosophy of life underwent great changes. Westerner at first and partisan of a state of law and democratic values, the war taught him patriotism and showed him the incompetence of a Provisional Government directed by University people and politicians without intelligence, his former friends. The outcome of Second World War and the indifference of the Allies towards the suffering of the people made him hope for the coming of an internationalism which would allow the two sick nations of Europe, Germany and Russia, to find a new sense to a life of solidarity among nations.

As a consequence of their defeat in the Civil War (1947-1949) 100,000 Greek communists were forced to flee their native country and take up residence in the Soviet Union. Today they form a strong Russian speaking community in Greece, united by a common experience and certain nostalgia for Soviet life. These ties are maintained through numerous cultural and social associations, especially in Athens and Salonika, as well as by a number of periodical publications. Through their press, they convey a positive image of Russia today, relying on international friendship and Russian nationalism. While these publications tend to dismiss communist ideology, they reject at the same time all kinds of liberalism, promoting an ideology inspired by the writing of I.A. Il’in and I.L. Solonevitch. My article focuses on this emerging image of Russia as it is exemplified in the contemporary Greek press published in Russian.

K. N. Leontiev (1831-1991) was born in a traditional aristocratic family that observed the rituals of the Orthodox Church in a rather perfunctory manner. However he experienced a dramatic conversion at the age of 30, when he was deadly sick in a remote town of the middle-east where he worked as a Russian Consul. As a result, he became a fervent Orthodox believer and visited a number of well-known monasteries before becoming a monk at the very end of his life. His Orthodoxy was close to the Byzantine tradition and did not indulge in the liberal tendencies of the time. So Leontiev strongly criticised the humanistic trends of Tolstoy’s and Dostoïevsky’s novels as well as the reforms of Alexander II that diluted the good monarchical order inspired by true Orthodoxy. Nevertheless, Leontiev was very tolerant and even sympathised up to a certain point with Catholicism and the ideas of Vladimir Soloviev. He was in favour of an oecumenical church which could preach the gospel more efficiently, on condition that the authority of the Orthodox church would not be denied. Leontiev admired the social order that the Muslim faith provided and its respect of other confessions. So he was not in favor of a Russian or international intervention in the Slavic countries dominated by Muslim rule as this would mean a weakening of religion and a strengthening of liberal and atheistic ideas in the population concerned. К.Н.
