This article focuses on conversions to orthodoxy (in the case of Crimean Tatars in Muscovy), and conversions to Islam (in the case of Muscovite Russians in the Crimean Khanate). Converts are usually captives, so that it is difficult to speak of a real choice. The conversion appears here as the possibility of having his chance in a foreign society. In the case of Crimean Tatars, it is impressive to see the rapidity of integration resulting from conversion. The documents do not reflect individual destinies. In their statements, converts rewrite their own biographies. Such is the case of Kenanko-Grigori – a Tatar, who, having been taken prisoner, argued about Russian origins to get a privileged status, including the assistance of Simeon of Polotsk. It is difficult to prove to what extent this biography is dictated by the conditions of conversion. The small number of converted on both sides is to be noted: Tatar prisoners were normally quickly exchanged for prisoners Moscow, always more numerous. As the Muscovites captives, here, the Crimean society (linked to nomadic traditions), showed no a great desire for integration. The majority of them remained Orthodox.

The article analyses two documents, produced by the office of the governor (voevoda) of Astrakhan; they reveal one of the eldest pilgrimages to Mecca, accomplished by a subject of the Tsar. It is regrettable that the author – Aley Adji – tells very little about himself and his voyage to Arabia, but only satisfies the curiosity of his interlocutors, who questioned him only about the strategic situation of the frontiers of the Ottoman Empire, in the Black Sea region and in the Northern Caucasus. Aley Adji is classified by Muscovite scribes as belonging to the «Tatars», but he could as well be a Nogay. It is extremely interesting that Aley Adji does not consider it as necessary to hide the goal of his pilgrimage from the Muscovite authorities, and that these authorities did not regard his voyage as suspect or illegal. Both documents analysed in this article are published – in the original version and in French translation, which can by useful for specialists of the Ottoman Empire.

This article is about the account of Leontii Sukhotin, a palace official (zhilets) at the Moscow court, who was captured by the Crimean Tatars in 1659 and returned to Muscovy only in 1672. Sukhotin was sold to Istanbul as a slave. He worked on the galleys, after which he was released and became a Muslim. His participation in the Ottoman campaign against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth gave him the opportunity to disguise as a Cossack and to return to Muscovy via Ukraine. Sukhotin’s account is the only testimony of a seventeenth-century Russian’s conversion to Islam. Being addressed to the Muscovite authorities, it is an amazing amalgam of autobiographical details and stereotypes which can be found in many narratives by former captives. Trad. Olga Cadars

Vassili Nikititch Tatichtchev

This article is about Vasilii Nikitich Tatishchev (1686-1750), a high state official, philosopher, and author of the well-known "Russian History". The article analyzes the rich secondary sources on Tatishchev, in particular the monography by Aleksei Tolochko. That author questions the assumption that Tatishchev had at his disposal a number of sources which were lost later. Tolochko is therefore very sceptical about the value of several pieces of information given only by Tatishchev. The article also deals with Tatishchev's life, re-examining the historian's autobiographical works, which the authors of most of his biographies left unquestioned. Studying Tatishchev's work in the context of 18th-century historiography, the final part of the article shows the complexity of this eminent historian's relation to the Enlightenment. Trad.
