This article traces the genesis and development of the Ukrainian collections held at the bulac, which stem from the former holdings of the Library of Oriental Languages and the Paris Institute of Slavonic Studies. It explores how, in a context marked by the exile of intellectual elites and the centralising policies of the ussr, both institutional and individual actors contributed to the emergence of Ukrainian studies in France. Attention is given to the legacy of Élie Borschak, a mediator between Ukrainian and French scholarly circles, as well as to the presence in the bulac collections of publications from the Ukrainian Executed Renaissance, a period of literary and artistic effervescence, which started in the 1920s, before being brutally interrupted by Stalinist repression in the 1930s. Through a cross-analysis of provenance, political context, and institutional trajectories, the study shows how French libraries became custodians of an intellectual memory long subjected to censorship, while highlighting the historiographical and symbolic significance of these collections.

In 1918 Romania acquires new territories on which large Slavic minorities live. The issue of their integration into the national, centralized and unitarian state that is Romania at the time leads, in the interwar period, to the rise of a nationalist discourse, that turns the Ukrainian minority from Bukovina (called the “Ruthenian” minority) into Romanians that cannot speak their mother tongue. The issue of Romanians from abroad in Moldova and Ukraine leads nowadays and since the beginning of the 1990s to a revival of this nationalist myth.
