This interdisciplinary study combining historical-political and cultural-anthropological approaches, as well as hagiography, hymnography and iconography, reveals the complex history of the celebration of the Synaxis of All Saints of Russia, in close connection with the emergence and development of Russian nationalism and imperialism. Special attention in this study is paid to the opposition and transformation of the terms “Russia” and “Rus” as socio-political, ethnocultural and historical concepts. We refute the historiographical myth that this feast day appeared in the 16th-17th centuries. The celebration appears to us as an invented tradition, a simulacrum, created only in the 20th-21st centuries (1918, 1946, 2013) against a background of socio-political cataclysms in Russia, even if certain late medieval elements were used to create it. Today, this celebration becomes a means of cultural appropriation for the Russian church and society. The comparison with the liturgical practices of other Orthodox churches emphasises the specifically Russian character of this celebration and its inconsistency with the universal Orthodox tradition.

This article explores the issue of primitive language and its links with the fantasy of an “authentic” national language in Andrei Bely’s first novel The Silver Dove (1909). This topic is discussed from three perspectives in accordance with the several meanings of the adjective “primitive”: “simple” (natural language, popular), “first” (mythical, original language), and “degenerate” (a language in the process of degradation). These three aspects of primitive language were part of Bely’s quest for a Russian national identity. Yet, the nationalist subtext of the novel opposing Russia to the West paradoxically found its sources and models in the French and German philosophies and literatures. Therefore, I propose to study primitive language and its national stakes in The Silver Dove through these Western influences in order to analyze the mechanisms of the poetic appropriation of these ideas by Silver Age literature. I illuminate this linguistic facet of Primitivism, which left its mark on many Russian texts on the eve of the Revolution, by placing it in its broader European context.

How did the three Romanian Lands – each with its own history – create present-day Romania acting as a nation state? This article will focus on the rise of nationalist feelings over the various historical events: the end of the Phanariote epoch and the treaty of Andrinople, the elaboration of a common project for Wallachia and Moldova, the impression of freedom in 1848 which expressed the fascination for the Western model. This article will then highlight the differences between the two Principalities of the Old Kingdom – Wallachia and Moldova – and the collective consciousness of the inhabitants of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in Banat and Transylvania.

History shows how much Romania refuses to consider its geopolitical environment, up until nowadays, since – in spite of urgent necessities and similar cases – Romania is turning its back on Russia. A victimization speech is being heard since Romania gave up Bessarabia to the Russian Empire at the Congress of Berlin. In the First World War however, Romania sided with Russia again to get Transylvania back. But anti-Bolshevism and anti-Russianism quickly blended to create a hard core of Romanianness. Under the communist period, Romania gradually stood aloof from its Slavic “big brother”. And finally nowadays, its decisions are mainly Atlantic-oriented, though some of its stands do show a common identity with Russia (as illustrated in the opposition to the independence of Kosovo).

In 1918 Romania acquires new territories on which large Slavic minorities live. The issue of their integration into the national, centralized and unitarian state that is Romania at the time leads, in the interwar period, to the rise of a nationalist discourse, that turns the Ukrainian minority from Bukovina (called the “Ruthenian” minority) into Romanians that cannot speak their mother tongue. The issue of Romanians from abroad in Moldova and Ukraine leads nowadays and since the beginning of the 1990s to a revival of this nationalist myth.
