The Experience of Language through Form and Voice. An Essay with Yakubinsky and Voloshinov Both Yakubinsky and Voloshinov aproach the phenomenon of language as activity within a society. In this perspective, verbal activity shows itself in diverse forms, in turn determined by the situation and its interlocutors, as well as structured by types of interactions. Plurality becomes a core notion in describing language, plurality expressing itself in certain forms. For Yakubinsky, these forms are to be linguistically analysed, and his analysis actually reveals a movement of back and forth within language: depending of the form, the « linguistic factor itself » can be more or less developped. As Voloshinov conceives the real substance of language not as system of abstracted forms but as constituted by verbal interaction and as realized in utterances, the issue of the form of the utterance is to him a core one. Voloshinov’s analysis demonstrates these forms as due to shared and lived experiences, accomplished in sociocultural determined situations and saturated by social evaluations. As form, intonation is to Voloshinov of primary importance for the construction of the utterance – and thus, voice. Voice is also found in consciousness, because of the dialogical structure of reflection, involving at least two voices. Voice indicates, expresses, and manifests a certain verbal form in a certain way, thus belonging to all verbal forms as integral part, by no means a mere envelope. The contribution will develop the notions of voice and form with the aim of conceiving verbal forms for the social and shared domain, as well as within the domain belonging to the individual’s mental activity (social but un-shared) ; this leads eventually to consider the role voice in consciousness.

The paper examines the period of the 1970-80s, when the semioticians associated with the Tartu-Moscow semiotic school took great interest in the then-hot topic of the functional asymmetry of the human brain as a possible neurophysiological basis of thought and consciousness. Soviet semioticians produced a number of articles and books, analysing cultural, linguistic and other semiotic phenomena, based on neurological studies of the structure of the human brain. Yuri Lotman’s attention to this problem was quite ambivalent; on the one hand, the study of brain asymmetry coincided with his postulate that any meaningful message can only be produced at the intersection of at least two languages, but on the other hand, and peculiarly enough, it was during this period that Lotman coined the concept of semiosphere, which essentially defies naturalistic, deterministic, and phrenological approaches of culture.
