This article examines several censorship cases from the 2000s: the prosecution brought against the works by Bayan Shiryanov and Ilya Masodov initiated by Mikhail Lesin, then head of the Ministry of Press, Broadcasting, and Mass Communications; the lawsuits filed against the books of Bayan Shiryanov and Vladimir Sorokin at the instigation of the organization Idushchie vmeste (“Walking Together”); and, finally, the destruction of Ilia Kormiltsev’s publishing projects through the combined efforts of various state repressive agencies. Although these cases clearly demonstrate a gradual shift from private censorship initiatives undertaken by “vigilant citizens” to the development—within state institutions—of systematic methods for suppressing undesirable literature, literary communities tend to perceive them merely as curious exceptions, assuming themselves to be invisible to the authorities. Drawing on Robert Darnton and applying an ethnographic approach to the phenomenon of censorship, the article explores how the factors that have shaped the literary field of post-Soviet Russia (modes of group interaction, regimes of publicity, regimes of reading and writing) interact with the political forces and dynamics of early Putinism, thereby generating, from within the system itself, this “effect of invisibility.”

The article examines the School of Contemporary Literary Practices, a creative writing training program initiated in Moscow in the early 2020s by, among others, two contemporary Russian authors, Evgenia Nekrasova and Oksana Vasyakina. It analyses the prospects for literary renewal targeted by the project: modernization of the prose language, work on “black spots” in Russian literature (marginalized voices and experiences), and adoption of feminist and decolonial approaches. The article places this initiative in the broader context of alternative projects that emerged in the Russian literary field from the late 2010s to the early 2020s, and discusses the limitations of such a project, particularly in terms of real access for people from minorities to such training (financial selectivity).

This paper examines Russian anti-utopian fiction of the first decade of the twenty-first century, offering a concise overview of the main plots while identifying recurring themes, motifs, and narrative patterns that together form a collective image of an imagined Russia. The analysis focuses on how these works reinterpret the past, engage with the present, and envision the future, while situating their perspectives within broader concepts of time and space. At its core, the study raises a crucial question: to what extent—within the context of contemporary Russian history, where real events often outstrip even the most daring fantasies—can reality not only catch up with fiction, but also surpass it?

The article presents a comparative analysis of Dmitry Bykov’s The Justification (2001) and Zakhar Prilepin’s The Abode (2014). Despite their differences, both works depict attempts to justify the violence of the Soviet regime. This intention seems to resonate with the discourses of communist prisoners in the Gulag, for whom the search for an explanation of evil coincided with the desire to exonerate the Party. The neologism “sovietodicy”, introduced in analogy with the concept of theodicy, refers to this logic. The study of these two novels—written by authors who explicitly claim adherence to the ideological legacy of communism—sheds light on the evolution of such narratives in post-Soviet Russia. While in both novels the attempt to justify violence ends in failure, their comparative analysis highlights two divergent approaches: whereas D. Bykov’s novel culminates in the recognition of a lost utopia, Z. Prilepin reinterprets this failure into a patriotic narrative aligned with the memory policies of the Putin regime.

This article explores the status of poetry in two poems by Maria Stepanova. On the one hand, the poem “The War of Beasts and Animals” (2015) shows that war shatters the language system, absorbing humans into the unrepresentable; on the other hand, the poem “The Body Returns” (2018) demonstrates the life-giving power of poetic speech, capable of recreating an ethical and poetic system that restores the bond between people and between cultures.

This article offers a preliminary analysis of emerging practices in poetic translation in contemporary Russia that, I argue, carry political significance by destabilizing the symbolic order maintained by the Kremlin. The first practice is translation activism, examined here through Russian translations of contemporary Belarusian and Ukrainian poetry, including works addressing repression in Belarus, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and war crimes committed by the Russian army. The second practice follows what Polish-British cultural theorist Kasia Szymańska calls translation multiples: serial translation in which neither the original nor its translation is final, and each text triggers further (potentially infinite) variation. I discuss a Russian example in Igor Bulatovski’s project Mandelstam/Celan in which he creates his own variations on Mandelstam’s poems and Paul Celan’s German translations, assembling originals, translations, and new poems into complex, hybrid works. Both practices, I suggest, arise from a set of shared premises: the rejection of ‘timeless’ meanings in poetic translation; the understanding of translation as a situated, communicative act performed before a politically engaged audience; and the view that encountering the Other in translation is an ongoing, dynamic process.

The article examines the evolution of Russian dramaturgy following the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, which caused a major rupture in the Russian theatrical landscape. Drawing primarily on the analysis of selections from the Lubimovka festival over the past three years (2022-2024), the study explores three major trends. First, it analyses the ambiguous practice of author anonymization, sometimes perceived as an act of conformism, sometimes as a form of resistance. Second, it observes the increasing use of allegorical forms that translate an absurd reality and construct a meta-Aesopian discourse that itself signals censorship. Third, it explores the rise of autofictional plays that transform personal experience into political action, questioning the subject’s agency in a repressive context and making writing itself a space of resistance, an “art of the weak” according to Michel de Certeau’s expression.

This paper aims to investigate the evolution of reportage in contemporary Russia. The reportage intensively developed in Soviet times and then underwent a profound transformation in the post-Soviet era, progressively becoming a crucial instrument of documentation and resistance against the Russian regime. It has a hybrid character, caught between the journalistic and literary dimensions. The analysis focuses on three pivotal writings recently published abroad after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine: Èto my bežency by Valerij Paniushkin, Moja ljubimaja strana by Elena Kostyuchenko and Unesi ty moë gore by Katerina Gordeeva. These reportages represent three examples of a new evolution of the genre. Through these three examples, the aim is to show the evolution of Russian reportage in recent years and the progressive hybridisation with other genres, such as the memoir. If, on one hand, the same archetypical elements are observed, such as the importance of testimony or chorality, on the other hand, there is clearly a gradual reclaiming of the private dimension.

The article examines Russian-language émigré autofiction as a literary phenomenon emerging in the context of political crisis and migration after 2022. Drawing on contemporary texts, autofiction is analysed not only as a representation of personal experience and identity crisis, but also as a performative practice that constructs a fluid self. Particular attention is given to the publishing strategies of the “new tamizdat” and to the transformation of autofiction’s generic boundaries in relation to changing sociocultural conditions. The article introduces the concept of fluid identity as a key to understanding the poetics and ethical orientation of autofictional writing. A case study of Polina Barskova’s The Sybils, or The Book of Marvelous Transformations demonstrates how autofiction functions as a performative genre combining documentary, imaginative, and traumatic modalities of experience. The article concludes that Russian-language émigré autofiction in the autumn of 2025 is undergoing an active phase of generic expansion.
