Vyacheslav Ivanov’s letters to his children, written during the first period of his life in Italy (1926-1934), contain an essential testimony of his conversion to Catholicism (1926), which he does not consider in the traditional way as an abjuratio, but as a way of reuniting with the universal Church. These letters especially allow to clarify his relationship to Orthodoxy and Russia, and paradoxically assert his faithfulness to the original Eastern Church, victim, according to him, of “bad shepherds” and subjected, particularly since Peter the Great, to Russian temporal power. But his religious choices are also a way for him to find his own place in universal culture, so that for him all links are now broken with real Russia.
