Many ballet masters of the 19th century all over Europe had not only been choreographers (in the sense of composing ballets) but also choreo-graphers (in the sense of notating (their own) ballets). The contribution focuses on the phenomena of producing and displaying spectacularity on stage as recorded in notation. The methodological frame of this analysis is ‘dance literacy’ as displayed in the widely documented corpus of notated dance texts: notated sketches by Petipa himself, the Sergeev Collection, full scores (of the ballets Paquita and Le Corsaire left by Henri Justamant; the content is the (exemplary) exploration of the media and aesthetics of spectacularity as skillfully communicated in the ‘writings’ of 19th century ballet masters. The perspective on (performatively) manufacturing ballets intends to contribute to the discourse on the then professional concepts and routines of ‘mise en scène’ (in Justamant’s words) mainly in France and Russia and on the aesthetical programs and diversities the 19th century ballet masters met – and created.
