The 19th c. was a period of animated discussions about the unity and the future of Christians. As a result of those disputes, new religious movements within Christianity were born, for instance the Oxford Movement (in the first half of century) and the Old Catholic Church (after the First Vatican Council). The period produced also many conversions to Catholicism by people who, disappointed with other denominations, desired to break with their past, as reflected in their memoirs and apologetic works. This paper focuses on two texts written by some of the most interesting converts of the 19th c.: Apologia pro vita mea by the Russian Catholic Vladimir Sergeevich Petcherin, and Apologia pro vita sua by the English Catholic Cardinal John Henry Newman. Written almost at the same time, their authors being almost of the same age, the texts share many affinities, as they both defend the converts’ choice of religion against the persistent criticism of their former fellow-believers, new co-religionists, and, naturally, their religious enemies. The paper compares the biographies and conversions of the two authors, analyzing similarities and differences in their spiritual trajectories and apologetic writings.
