Eis uma história… by Olga Gonçalves (1992) is one of the rare post-25 April Portuguese novels to focus exclusively on the issue of emigration: a group of men are taken in by two dishonest smugglers who will drop them off, after a night of travel, in “França”, a small village lost in the north of Portugal. In the van that transports them, the characters tell each other stories that, through their individual memories, refer to a collective memory. This polyphonic story thus acts as a work of memory by recalling the reasons and conditions that caused the great Portuguese migratory movements of the sixties and seventies. More broadly, it questions the relationship between the representation of reality and the writing of the imaginary, and, consequently, the notion of historical truth.

This work aims at questioning on the subject of travel in Saramago’s books, from some novels that, somehow, propose an itinerary through the wanderings of a character, like Jesus (The Gospel According to Jesus Christ), Cain (Cain), or by the official story (the Journey of the Elephant). In all cases, the journey by Saramago’s writing proposes the route through the “wrong ways” of the contemporary era revisited by the author, whose requests are based on the deconstruction of traditional narratives, proposing a reflection about the boundaries between history and fiction by subjectivity, self-reflexion and intertextuality, picturing there by historiographic metafiction to Linda Hutcheon.
