This study aims to demonstrate, through the analysis of an eighteenth-century satire by Basílio da Gama and a pastiche by Manuel da Silva Gaio (1925), that Camões indeed functions as a “prior library” for many poets, whether or not they have been remembered by posterity. Following a theoretical clarification of the concepts of textual derivation—parody and pastiche—intended to classify the texts under consideration, the article shows that while the poems by Basílio da Gama (designed to censure one of his contemporaries) and by Silva Gaio (an incitement to action) borrow from The Lusiads both in form and style, they above all draw on its ideological foundation, namely the expression of national pride, Portuguese glory, and a specific national identity. These notions are reappropriated and applied to the respective historical circumstances in which each text was produced.

Across Pepetela’s body of work, one of the most esteemed novelists in Lusophone literatures, allegory has become a procedure of significant meaning. Beyond the presence of thematic allegory, derived from a grounded interpretation of the novel, some works adopt a didactic vocation and deepen social and political reflection. Set in a sufficiently indeterminate time and space, with a specific treatment of characters and an orientation of action toward a determined end, these narratives—requiring a dual reading—are called fables and parables by Pepetela. In this study, drawing on the narrative A parábola do Cágado Velho (1996), we show how this narrative constitutes a reinterpretation of classical literary allegories, also present in Guerra Interior, by Father Matias de Andrade (1743).

Far from being a genre scene, a reinterpretation of the Salome myth—a worn-out figure of fin-de-siècle literature—the performance given by “the American” in A Confissão de Lúcio by Mário de Sá-Carneiro is, on the contrary, fully imbued with modernity, not least in its unapologetic affirmation of female homosexuality. Rather than Oscar Wilde’s Salome, revisited by Strauss in his opera, the author prefers less mythical and far more real figures: Belle Époque dancers who, through their Art, generate a breeze of novelty and whose sexual practices disrupt heteronormativity. By opening his novella with a female character freed from the patriarchal and heteronormative model, the author positions himself resolutely as modern.

The Brazilian actor Amácio Mazzaropi (1912–1981) was, for nearly thirty years, the most popular performer in Brazil. By drawing on several comic traditions already present in the country, he succeeded in creating a unique character that became an enduring figure in Brazilian cinema: Jeca. His films also incorporated circumstantial elements, such as the spaghetti western, a relationship that constitutes the focus of the present study.

Drawing on the most recent scholarship devoted to transtextuality, and in particular on studies concerned with intertextuality, this article analyses the forms and functions of reference and allusion in the chronicles sent by Eça de Queiroz between 1892 and 1897 to the Rio de Janeiro newspaper Gazeta de Notícias.

A prolific novelist and the creator of La Comédie Humaine, Honoré de Balzac exerted a lasting influence on major Portuguese novelists from the nineteenth century onwards. In the first half of the twentieth century, Joaquim Paço d’Arcos, through the six novels that make up the cycle Crónica da vida lisboeta, emerges as an original disciple of the French master. However, his admiration for Balzac by no means entails a servile imitation; on the contrary, it gives rise to a creative reappropriation. Focusing primarily on the themes of love and money, this study seeks to determine the true extent of Joaquim Paço d’Arcos’s debt to La Comédie Humaine, understood as a hypotext, and to identify, in relation to the Balzacian model, the elements of alterity and originality that characterise Crónica da vida lisboeta, conceived as a hypertext.

This text seeks to analyze the intricacies of Portugal’s historical connection to the African continent through references to African spaces in Portuguese literature, a relationship regarded as one of the most significant topics of Portuguese identity. Reflection on Africa in Portuguese literature unfolded between the sense of belonging imposed by the heroization of the past and the desire to assert an Atlantic identity following the abandonment of the African colonies. Tracing the historical transformations of Portuguese colonialism, it is observed that the dissemination of this theme occurred primarily from the 19th century onward, up to the pivotal moment of memory regarding the Colonial War, where the colonial “trauma” is joined by the need for reflection in the post-colonial period, often echoing the memory of the national past.

In this article, we seek to identify and characterize Manuel António Pina’s work of parodic (de)construction, in which voices and memories (from everyday life, literature, music, cinema…) converge to produce ironic and satirical commentary. However, this irony and satire, more or less humorous, are never merely destructive or one-dimensional; they always offer reflections that invite readers to view the world in a less conventional and predictable way.

Literary transposition being a practice that has persisted throughout history, this essay compares two radio drama adaptations of the novel Canga by the Madeiran writer Horácio Bento de Gouveia. This cultural genre, which enjoyed a wide audience in Portugal during the 1950s and 1960s and continued to evolve alongside the increasingly dominant audiovisual media, not only disseminates culturally significant literary texts—albeit in a mediated form—but also helps establish a canon of fiction narrative for new generations. Without compromising the spirit of the work, Judite Navarro and Carlos Cabral produced, at different times, distinct versions of the novel, both offering their personal interpretation and aiming to meet the expectations and tastes of the anticipated audience.

Tristes Tropiques, by Claude Lévi-Strauss, 57 years after its publication, continues to inspire new readings. Here, we show how the gaze he cast upon the Brazilian landscape, when he arrived in 1935, was fundamentally a pictorial gaze, infused with the paintings of Poussin, Henri Rousseau, as well as the tableau-narratives of Chateaubriand and Baudelaire, among others. These references, far from remaining purely external to the work, are genuine tools of thought, or, in other words, function as aesthetic operators of his thinking.

This work aims at questioning on the subject of travel in Saramago’s books, from some novels that, somehow, propose an itinerary through the wanderings of a character, like Jesus (The Gospel According to Jesus Christ), Cain (Cain), or by the official story (the Journey of the Elephant). In all cases, the journey by Saramago’s writing proposes the route through the “wrong ways” of the contemporary era revisited by the author, whose requests are based on the deconstruction of traditional narratives, proposing a reflection about the boundaries between history and fiction by subjectivity, self-reflexion and intertextuality, picturing there by historiographic metafiction to Linda Hutcheon.

Caught in a long-avoided war, Portugal unwillingly became the stage for a multitude of crimes. But how were the horrors of war interpreted on both sides? Between a conquering army and a submissive people, between invasion and rebellion, justified or denounced crimes were legion. Through these accusations, a hierarchy of values emerges, shaping the identity of opposing camps. The definition of crime and its hierarchical treatment during the Napoleonic invasions reflects a system of thought that this contribution seeks to explore.

At the time of independence, Brazil followed a different path from most countries on the American continent. The uniqueness of the Brazilian process began in 1808, with the transfer of the Portuguese Court and royal family to the city of Rio de Janeiro, following the Napoleonic wars in Europe. From that moment, Brazil became the center of the Kingdom of Portugal and was eventually elevated — from a colony — to the status of United Kingdom with Portugal in 1815.

Between 1990 and 1995, the Brazilian state of Pernambuco experienced a significant increase in land conflicts in the sugarcane region. The Pastoral Land Commission (CPT), a Church-based organization, then undertook work to denounce the violence occurring there. It published annual notebooks titled Conflitos no Campo, reporting crimes against workers instigated by sugarcane producers and refinery owners. At the same time, the sugarcane region saw a gradual resurgence of peasant movements, supported by rural unions and the Landless Workers’ Movement. Their main objective was to implement agrarian reform on unproductive lands. This text therefore aims to analyze the role of the CPT in this area of Pernambuco and its work of reporting and denouncing violence. In a context of high social tension, did this work constitute a new form of support for agrarian reform? By what means was it carried out?
