      <title>Agentes da palavra impressa e as luzes</title>
      <link>http://interfas.univ-tlse2.fr/reflexos/1758</link>
In a reflection on the thematic axis of translations of the Enlightenment in the political contexts of Latin America, I propose to reverse my approach, which escapes from the history of ideas (without taking away any merit from the results obtained in this field) in an attempt to understand the very idea of Enlightenment or Illustration. To do this, I will use the corpus of documents consisting of editorial paratexts written by Portuguese and, in particular, Luso-Brazilian translators, in which they attempt to put forward meanings for the term ‘luzes’ or its variants. The variations in meaning found will be analysed in comparison with the ‘official’ versions of the term, in dictionaries for example, or in the writings of the judges of the Real Mesa Censória - particularly in censorship notices. In this way, reflecting on the translation into Portuguese of Enlightenment texts is also an exercise in trying to understand history ‘from below’, based on the efforts of a hundred or so individuals involved in the translation process and in interpretations of this process. </description>
