For many years, Portuguese held the status of a peripheral language and was therefore not taught in France. Nevertheless, it was translated, and the nineteenth century saw a proliferation of publications in the language of Camões in Paris. Toward the end of the century, private initiatives to organize courses emerged, but they did not achieve the expected results. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the teaching of modern languages within the French national education system underwent a reform. Classified as a “southern language” and associated with Spanish, Portuguese gradually began to gain institutional recognition thanks to the efforts of various figures such as Ernest Martinenche and later Georges Le Gentil, who in 1919 delivered the first courses at the Sorbonne. However, it was not until the 1970s that Portuguese achieved full independence, with the establishment of a complete academic curriculum, as well as the CAPES and the Agrégation.

From the reading of José Saramago’s essayistic reflections on the relationship between fiction and History, we investigate some guidelines on what we designate as ethics of History. We understand that this concern, originated from a critique of the notion of the “end of history”, and established from the understanding according to which History, as the Western culture came to conceive it, is somewhat problematic because it is revealed as another one of the strategies of the ideologies of domination which results in the nullification of lives. Demanding attitude, renewal through questioning, the ethics of history, according to Saramago, is based on the work of repairing what has happened in order to allow the emergence of new meanings of history, considering it as a device for observing its own constituents and as a possibility to rethink the present in a critical way, and thus to found the future.
