This paper develops a reflection on the concept of dialogue, both from a perspective of strict discursive conformation and especially in a broader sense, of Bakhtinian heritage. In both cases, we are dealing with works by José Saramago from the 1980s, especially The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis and what will be referred to as his dialogical scene; it is here that we find Reis’ wandering around Lisbon, his encounters with Fernando Pessoa and the projected intertextual manifestations that run through the story. Some of the critical works on that novel will be called upon, according to the contribution that they bring to this approach, thus helping to bring to light certain aporias in Saramago’s work.

This work proposes, based on the reading of the novels Blindness and The year of the death of Ricardo Reis and their filmic adaptations by Fernando Meirelles and João Botelho, to analyze how the cinematographic discourse appropriates José Saramago’s novels in the sense of adhering to their metafictional and political nature, thus composing filmic texts with a self-reflexive feature.

Published in book form for the first time in 1971, This World and the Other comprises 61 chronicles that José Saramago published in the newspaper A Capital between 1968 and 1969. Our reflection aims to understand how the themes addressed in those short texts contributed to the development of the great novels written from the end of the 70s onwards. If it is true that works such as Raised from the Ground, Baltasar and Blimunda, The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis, The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, among many others, have made Saramago a universal writer, it is no less true to say that many of the themes and motifs addressed in the novels can already be found in the chronicles. To speak, therefore, of a Saramago in the making is to shed light on a field of Saramago’s narrative that deserves more attention, as it is there that we find much of the literary sap that will feed his work.

“What if…?” is a question calling for an answer pertaining to the realm of the hypothetical-conditional, one that is at the heart of “speculative fiction”. José Saramago offers to circumvent this generic and normative classification in order to question, from the present, the writings about foundation, namely the “creation” of Portugal with The History of the Siege of Lisbon and the founding principles of Christianism with The Gospel according to Jesus Christ. Whereas the writing “in palimpsest” of an alternate history is meticulously described with the help of a “surgressive” narrator in the former, the latter work offers a counterfactual reading “effect” in choosing a perceptual and intentional shift in symbolic figures of the New Testament. A game-centered approach of counterfactuals shows the similarities in the narrative “interventionism” of Saramago, most notably with the use of clues and nods.

In his Dialogues with Carlos Reis, José Saramago acknowledges the great influence of Raúl Brandão, especially of Húmus, and also admits that his great masters were “the 17th century writers António Vieira and Francisco Manuel de Melo”, especially the former. The truth, however, as the writer has stated on other occasions, is that it is not possible to ignore the enormous fascination that authors such as Luís de Camões, Almeida Garrett, Cesário Verde or Fernando Pessoa and his various heteronyms have directly or indirectly exercised over him or his work. If Brandão transmitted to him a taste for reflections on the existence and essence of God or on human existence and, consequently, on “what it is to be a human being”; if he retained from Garrett, among other influences, the digressive practice, from António Vieira he took a way of writing and a way of looking at and assessing the world that made, and still makes, him a humanist and a humanitarian. In the web of echoes that we hear in Saramago’s work, we should also point out that Luís de Camões, Cesário Verde and Fernando Pessoa’s words run through narratives such as The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis, sometimes in an ideologically worked filigree, thus confirming Julia Kristeva’s assumption that every text is “a crossing of words (of texts), where we read, at least, another text”.

The last novel José Saramago published in his lifetime, Cain recreates some of the myths of the Judeo-Christian cultural legacy and proposes a critical re-reading of the First Testament. As a reinterpretation of the sacred narratives, the novel aims to question their postulates and deconstruct the monopoly of meaning that controls access to these texts. Saramago summons the letter of the text and interprets it without the rules and injunctions imposed by the canon, offering irony the leading role in the process of rewriting the biblical story. This article studies Saramago’s mode of interaction with the biblical text in light of the reading and supplementation strategies that characterize Midrashic literature. The comparison focuses on the processes of recreating characters, the transformation of the “gaps” of the biblical text into eisegetic opportunities, and the transfer of motives between stories and characters. The article aims to contribute to a more complete understanding of the “mechanics” of Saramago’s revisitation of the biblical canon.

In The Gospel according to Jesus Christ, José Saramago proposes an ideological rewrite of the Magdalean myth. Without making the economy of tradition, in order to maintain an easy identification of the evangelical character, the Portuguese writer reconfigures the invariants of the theme, undoubtedly drawing inspiration from the Gnostic Magdalene and the matriarchal religions, to relay through his heroine its feminist demands and its condemnation of the excesses of Catholicism.

José Saramago wrote about his amazement while reading Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, and there is an important dialogue between this book and Raised from the Ground. Even though the two novels contrast in their denouements, they are similar from the point of view of theme and narrative strategy. Taking into account other studies on these novels and emphasizing their re-enactment of tragic historical episodes, this paper intends to resume and analyze some of the main aspects of the dialogue between Saramago and García Márquez, in order to show that it is not restricted to the so-called magic realism nor to the best-known novel of the Colombian writer. The primary focus will therefore be a comparative analysis of the career path and the work of two authors with various affinities, who saw themselves as peers and who expressed their mutual admiration for each other’s creation.

This essay pretends to make a reading about the José Saramago’s novels starting with the sunshine metaphor of Levantado do chão up to the little intermittent lights that appears in Blindness, based on the ethical bet of his utopia’s survival. By means of Dante’s and Pasolini’s metaphors (il sole e l’altre stelle and the lucciole) reinterpreted by Didi-Huberman in The Survival of the Fireflies, I would like to bring to light the author’s engagement. Saramago reinforces the human possibilities to undermine, by positive little attitudes, the dystopic context where the ends of the 20e century was drowning.

In this article, we propose to begin a process of re-evaluation of the humanist dimension of José Saramago’s thought in the light of the Southern Epistemologies formulated by Boaventura de Sousa Santos. By questioning the relations of domination induced by the triad of capitalism, colonialism and patriarchy that generated inequalities and injustices, and by practicing a «grammar of absences» advocated by the theorist, the novelist has literary foreshadowed the thought of the sociologist who defines the South as a metaphor for human suffering.

Our aim is to analyse José Saramago’s dramatic production, namely A noite (1979), Que farei com este livro? (1980), A segunda vida de Francisco de Assis (1987), In Nomine Dei (1993), and Don Giovanni ou O dissoluto absolvido (2005). The five books were written on commission, but these texts are relevant in the field of Portuguese dramaturgy and in the author’s oeuvre as a whole. The plays, like Saramago’s work in general, are concerned with History, ideology, and the criticism of established powers, whether religious and political, or those which erupt in various forms of power exercised over the individual. In articulating the aesthetic, social and political dimensions, José Saramago’s dramaturgical writing explores different modes of resistance and resilience. Saramago’s drama has, therefore, an ethical and civic dimension, thus opening the five literary proposals to utopia.

From the reading of José Saramago’s essayistic reflections on the relationship between fiction and History, we investigate some guidelines on what we designate as ethics of History. We understand that this concern, originated from a critique of the notion of the “end of history”, and established from the understanding according to which History, as the Western culture came to conceive it, is somewhat problematic because it is revealed as another one of the strategies of the ideologies of domination which results in the nullification of lives. Demanding attitude, renewal through questioning, the ethics of history, according to Saramago, is based on the work of repairing what has happened in order to allow the emergence of new meanings of history, considering it as a device for observing its own constituents and as a possibility to rethink the present in a critical way, and thus to found the future.
