The concept of the show is dedicated to a constant redefinition since the genesis of the avant-garde aesthetics in literature and drama. Far from any tacit consensus, this concept will include other allegorical forms like the happening or synthetic drama that bring a new vision for the production and reception of acting. Our approach is based on the singular experience of Jean Dubuffet entitled "Coucou Bazar", and described as a "pictorial show" or "animated painting" and lying in a go-between painting and drama, where his paintings do not have frames as support while they are instead driven on a theater stage. Furthermore, we will try to analyze that experience to reflect on its aesthetic properties and its references, as well as the dramaturgical properties of scenic the scenic game as admitted in literature.

De(s)faire is a project which intends to question the choreographic process conditions in order to invent “new skills for creation”. To that end, Patricia Ferrara substitutes her choreographer’s function for a role of “game master” who just creates “interpretation frameworks” that “players” can freely appropriate. In those conditions, no one can anticipate the form arising from the process. In situ, this project takes roots in a relation to a place (La Fabrique, in Toulouse) and to people with different backgrounds diversely committed in this place. As the associate researcher and the making’s privileged witness of this project, I will try to bring to light De(s)faire’s critical and politic device questionning the artist’s authorial status, the notion of artwork and each one’s relation to art.

The “jeu-parti” (a form of medieval French lyrical poetry) is a poetic debate in verse highly prized in the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, based on a dialogical principle resembling theater. However, this principle masks a complex enunciative mechanism. It is this enunciative heterogeneity, this protean character of the I in the game that we want to examine in the hitherto understudied Lorraine corpus. The enunciative moment primarily follows the rules of the game. It creates a persona in a predefined framework of a poetic dialogue, inspired by academic disputatio. It therefore seems to follow a predetermined pattern. The I seems devoid of any substance. Yet in reality, the performance of the players lies elsewhere, in a constant game of role playing that serves as the spectacle. The partners give a performance, literally and figuratively, with the “jeu-parti” being above all a parlour game that weaves a veritable social network.

This article deals with the game all’improvizzo – a technique of theatrical game inherited from the Italian commedia dell’arte – revisited by two contemporary theater companies, the Company The brief Life and the Company The Dogs of Navarre. We will show how these companies take up with the tradition of the commedia dell’arte by placing in the center of their process of creation and representation the game all’improvizzo. This game does not design the improvised game but the “game in the impromptu”. Our subject aims at analyzing the links between the game all’improvizzo, the writing of stage and the performative game. Should we consider the game all’improvizzo as a way to build contemporary forms of popular theater ?

One of the first french medieval play, Le Jeu d’Adam, explores every distance : between the Bible and the theatral text, between the representation and the theory of incarnation. Dealing with the moment when Adam and Eve choose to disobey, that is to say to become human, the birth of the theater and the birth of the human temporality seem very close.

After the First World War, Germany faces a deep economic and politic stagnation generating a renewal of crime, the creation of clubs of game and the increasing morphine consumption. This new socio-economic reality gives birth to a critic on behalf of the expressionist artists and intellectuals. The most remarkable on this subject is the film of Fritz Lang Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler (Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler) (1922). In this film, Mabuse, a famous psychoanalyst and a great criminal, makes use of its hypnotic powers and the deck of cards to impose his will on the rest of the society. The deck of cards deck has two meanings: firstly, it makes it possible to the protagonist to enrich himself while making lose the players against whom he plays; secondly, it contributes to sit the supremacy of the protagonist who has a particular deck of cards representing the individuals that he wishes to steal and/or reduce to nothing by dehumanizing them.

Games in contemporary art exhibitions seem to be a key subject today if we consider the numerous artworks that include an interactive and entertaining dimension. By studying installations showing of a gameplay along with creation classified as video games, we are trying to understand better the issues of entertainment in the field of art. The phenomenon of « serious game » and « gamification » shows that the barrier between work and entertainment is obviously being called into question. Through entertaining and aesthetic approaches, we propose to study in a dialectical way the desires of influence and release that emerges when playing a game. From the artists’ point of view, a critical approach seems more appropriate, even though games are taking a growing role in the economic model of our societies Il tema del gioco nelle mostre di arte contemporanea sembra oggi inevitabile se ci rendiamo conto delle numerose opere che propongono una dimensione interattiva e divertente.

In 1772, Rousseau started writing his Dialogues in the hope of justifying himself. But he was alone, deprived of any social connection, persecuted and rejected by the intellectuals that formed the philosophical movement. His ideas on progress, his profession of faith, and, to a certain extent, his political, social, and moral models had made him an outcast, an enemy of the group of which Diderot, Voltaire, and d’Alembert, along with Grimm, were the key players. His situation was particularly alienating in that he was plunged into a deep silence that not only prevented him from being heard but also deprived him of the ability to understand his accusers. With his Dialogues, Rousseau created a linguistic surface, a virtual sociability that informed the same chess logic as Philidor and with which Rousseau was eventually able to understand his enemies, to listen and talk to them.

The aim of this paper is to study how Plato uses the concept of playing. It consists firstly in a comment of the Laws. In them, playing has an important role, but the concept of play is present in other dialogues which witness to his significance. Our research shows that playing is one of the fundamental dimensions of writing by Plato and that it says something of the human nature.

The work of Hélène Cixous reflects a constant desire to show the importance of a dream in the act of writing and to establish a parallel between dreaming and writing. In this perspective, she makes the dream the essential material of her works and writes her fictions « like in a dream » by giving them the logic of a dream. By doing so, we can say that the Cixous’ writings play a dream which itself is a game. In addition, the subject « I » in Cixous’ fictions is a game, especially because her writings share with a dream the same principles : the resemblance, absence, synonymy, homonymy, etc.

The novel Men of Good Will is full of the author’s doubles ; these real or imaginary beings play an ontological double game. Actually we can say that everything is double in Jules Romains’ work : characters, actions (one can become an impostor for different reasons, for instance to get lost in the crowd, or, on the contrary, to satisfy one’s ambition to distinguish oneself from the crowd), texts (often the duplicate precedes the original : Romains is a past master in the art of reversed self-parody). Thus we can say that Jules Romains weakens both reality and fiction. Playing with his own power he ends up undermining the credibility of his creation, that seems to obey insubstantial laws. Immanence replaces transcendence, and the text becomes a plastic surface, which is condemned to the lot of Penelope’s tapestry : the reader weaves and unravels it in the same time, without any hope that the cycle of these interpretative rebirths will ever come to an end.

In her novel, Orlanda, Jacqueline Harpman offers a playful variation on the parodic biography written by Virginia Woolf, Orlando, in which the eponymous character spontaneously changes sex. Imagining the effects that the discovery of this metamorphosis is causing on a reader, Aline Berger, Jacqueline Harpman depicts a psychological split: a repressed part of Aline’s psyche leaves her body to incarnate into a man’s body. So as to replay Orlando, that plays with sexual assignments and causes gender trouble, Jacqueline Harpman intends to propose a scheme in which the frameworks of sexual identity may be at stake. But because the standard of heterosexuality leads the game in Orlanda, gender trouble clears up and the game runs short.

In their search of identity, the Narrator and the Artiste punctually give the impression to be able to serve as reference marks in the card game. The Artiste uses his hands to cheat and manipulate the cards; the Narrator makes use of the word to live without ceiling. Still both friends, by correcting the chance, saved some moments of life. The interior search is left unsettled like the playing cards; proof that the real mystery, that of the being, is involved, in cards, but to play.

By choosing to work on a show stemming from the contemporary university theater, Pédale, Bijoux, Barbe, created by David Malan and Emmanuel Rogez in 2013, we wish to observe how problems approached by queer theory or study, particularly the notion of performativity developed by Judith Butler, as they articulate all together questions about identity, sexuality, language and power, and they influence the young theatrical creation: the point is to observe how young creators re-question their esthetic and their relationship in politic in terms of queer philosophies. This show is a kind of witness of an accomplished research of repolitisation from the young theatrical scene by a return in the fiction and in the narration: in this play, the precepts of the performance as the kind do not exclude the theatricality, as we can observe it in numerous shows of this last thirty years. I of the performance and the theatrical set (but also playful) are both closely articulated in a subversive and political creation.

How should we understand the relationship between writing and reading, the writer and the reader? In his “Preamble” to Life A User’s Manual, Georges Perec proposes the metaphor of the puzzle. The puzzle maker – the true writer – ponders every gesture of the puzzle assembler – the reader – ahead of time. Leaving nothing to chance, (s)he predetermines each “plausible combination”. This absolutist model is questionable considering Bergson’s criticism of the possible as well as Derrida’s of preformism. An examination of another model, the music score, as offered by Stéphane Mallarmé to describe his poem A throw of the dice never will abolish chance allows us to confront a prospective conception to the predeterminist one.
