This paper compares and opposes the French word “unarité” and “plasticity” to describe two ways to perceive an artistic work. “Unarité” consists in reducing the art production to a set of items used to denounce some facts considered non moral or to defend some ideological believes. On the opposite, plasticity strives to encompass many aspects, and particularly enigmatic, uncertain, disturbing ones. Transitionnality as a method of teaching and research for example tends to make the reception open to the artistic device considered as a matrix of plural relations of meanings and subjectivities.

« How can the spaces between the pages be as meaningful as the pages ?

If most of comics are drawn directly by their author, a few books were published since the 2000s that include mixed content : photographies, diagrams, documents and other borrowed materials. These incrustations tend to drive away comics from the traditional narrative scheme of the hero’s adventure. They also change the creative gesture from story-boarding writing to montage writing. Non-linearity, appropriation, deconstruction and reconstruction of the narrative point of view are a few of the aesthetical and political stakes of this intermedial way of making comics that we will try to understand in this text.
