Parcellisation

Considering the case of the movie Kapo (Gillo Pontecorvo, 1961) denounced by the film critic Jacques Rivette who decided on a number of moral and aesthetic criteria concerning cinematographic forms, this paper intends to show that censorship relies on three devices: fragmentation, withdrawal and isolation of a specific element from a given set, quotation and repetition as a means of testification.

This paper compares and opposes the French word “unarité” and “plasticity” to describe two ways to perceive an artistic work. “Unarité” consists in reducing the art production to a set of items used to denounce some facts considered non moral or to defend some ideological believes. On the opposite, plasticity strives to encompass many aspects, and particularly enigmatic, uncertain, disturbing ones. Transitionnality as a method of teaching and research for example tends to make the reception open to the artistic device considered as a matrix of plural relations of meanings and subjectivities.

Don DeLillo’s novel Point omega (2010) comes from the Douglas Gordon’s video 24H Psycho (1993) which slows the Hitchcock’s film Psycho (1959) so that it lasts twenty-four hours. The video and after it the novel both model differently the original film and create new reader’s and spectator’s attitudes and perceptions.

Bright star tells the last years of John Keats (1795-1821), from the moment he met Fanny Brawne, a young girl aged eigtheen, until he died of tuberculosis in Rome. This Jane Campion’s film is more than a biopic, more than the story of a life : it is characterized by the plasticity of the writing (poems and letters), visually present on the screen, and the progressive appearance of poetry linked to human experience and to everyday life situations.
