Sousilence

Keeping the words of the problem silent would involve a tactical gap. In this sense, the conceptualisation of sousilence opens to an alternative epistemological commitment, to a critical stance, in which artistic intervention silences the words of the problem. The meaning may seem anti-active, so much so that it resonates with a subject that is voluntarily hushed up or passed over in silence. But it should be seen as a new form of agentivity, between poetics and politics, able to interfere with the dominant and deleterious media and political voices, and turning silence into an activator of awareness.

This paper compares and opposes the French word “unarité” and “plasticity” to describe two ways to perceive an artistic work. “Unarité” consists in reducing the art production to a set of items used to denounce some facts considered non moral or to defend some ideological believes. On the opposite, plasticity strives to encompass many aspects, and particularly enigmatic, uncertain, disturbing ones. Transitionnality as a method of teaching and research for example tends to make the reception open to the artistic device considered as a matrix of plural relations of meanings and subjectivities.

Bright star tells the last years of John Keats (1795-1821), from the moment he met Fanny Brawne, a young girl aged eigtheen, until he died of tuberculosis in Rome. This Jane Campion’s film is more than a biopic, more than the story of a life : it is characterized by the plasticity of the writing (poems and letters), visually present on the screen, and the progressive appearance of poetry linked to human experience and to everyday life situations.

Historically associated with paper, comics are now experiencing a new material mode of existence in digital environments. This change in materiality has two consequences: on the one hand, the comic book becomes intrinsically manipulable and interactive (reading implies a gestural participation of the reader); on the other hand, it becomes possible to insert audiovisual content into the course of the story (what we will call hybridization below). Digital materiality is therefore characterized by a form of plasticity, in the sense that it generates dynamic, manipulable and hybrid works. More than a simple registration medium, digital technology thus constitutes a new semi-technical environment, within which comics are currently forging a new identity.
