The current proliferation of scented performances means that smell has now established itself as an additional mode of theater reception. However, the use of scent on stage remains relatively untheorized. This article analyzes two cases in which scent is shown to contribute to a performance in its own right: olfactory intrusion, which demonstrates the primacy of diegetic reality, and the informative power scent may acquire through cooperation with other dramaturgical components. It concludes with a call to recognize the semiotic power of scent, particularly in political theatre.

This study analyzes the evolution of olfactory stereotypes in Italian crime fiction through the works of three emblematic authors: Augusto De Angelis, Giorgio Scerbanenco, and Donato Carrisi. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach that integrates narrative semiotics, linguistic analysis, and embodied cognition theories, the research examines how smell functions as an investigative device, character development element, and builder of narrative atmospheres. The analysis reveals a progressive transformation: from social marker and material clue in De Angelis, to visceral expression of social critique in Scerbanenco, to metaphysical bridge between physical and psychic dimensions in Carrisi. This evolution reflects profound cultural changes in Italian society, from pre-war social stratification to postmodern fluidity, suggesting that the olfactory element is not simply descriptive ornamentation but an essential narrative device for creating suspense and emotional reader engagement. The study proposes a new methodological perspective for analyzing Italian crime fiction, demonstrating the potential of a literary olfactology of the genre.

This sociological study aims to analyze the importance of olfaction in livestock farming, as perceived by farmers. The objective is to depict how breeders use their sense of smell and that of their animals in their work. This study examines how this olfactory perception is integrated into their work through four breeding missions. This work seeks to understand how this lay and experiential knowledge combines with the technical and academic knowledge that guides agricultural practices. More broadly, this research is part of a reflection on the sensory implications involved in the formation and functioning of anthropozoological relationships.

How can olfaction contribute to the reception of a theatrical work? A few thoughts on the semiosis of scent in the theatre

The current proliferation of odorized shows means that smelling has now become an additional modality of theatre reception. However, the use of scent on stage remains relatively untheorized to this day. This article analyses two cases in which scent is autonomously capable of contributing to a performance: the olfactory intrusion, which manifests the primacy of diegetic reality, and the informative charge which scent acquires through cooperation with other dramaturgical constituents.

Anthropologists have long recognized the importance of sensory pathways for perceptual awareness. In virtual reality, an innovative approach is now being applied to the previously underestimated olfactory system. The Participe 3.0 research project aims to support the socio-educational strategies of young people with autism, using novel artifacts. Exploratory results suggest that an anthropocentric immersive environment stimulates the learning of an autistic public with specific psycho-sensory percepts, of which the olfactory channel constitutes a heuristic vector.

Human and Animal Olfaction in Livestock Farming Practices

This sociological study examines the importance of olfaction in livestock farming as perceived by farmers. The objective is to understand how farmers use both their own sense of smell and that of their animals in their day-to-day work. It explores how olfactory perception is integrated into four broad categories of livestock farming activities. The study also investigates how these experiential and practice-based forms of knowledge interact with the technical and academic knowledge that guides agricultural practices. More broadly, this research contributes to ongoing reflection on the role of sensory processes in the formation and functioning of human–animal relationships.

Fragrances are not just a divine-smelling creation. They are a wonderful language that can induce a whole range of sensations and feelings that perfumers, creative teams and students need to verbalize in order to co-create. This feedback explores the sensitive information shared during these sessions, which enable people to create fragrances for people, as a nose-to-nose, heart-to-heart dialogue. Empathy is at the service of creating a coherent product that delivers a maximum happiness in use.

This feedback report discusses the use of smell in caring for end-of-life patients in hospital. As two testimonials show, olfactotherapy helps to improve patients' comfort by temporarily enhancing their well-being. In the first case, the olfactory evocation of aromatic plants offers a gastronomic interlude to a patient who has lost her sense of taste. In the second case, it is a motionless journey to a familiar place where the scents of the garden provide respite to a couple imprisoned by an incurable disease.
