History of Metallic Materials Selection and Innovation in the Aircraft Industry

This paper tells the story of a journey of a community of scientists, engineers and designers to fulfil the oldest dream of human being: flying. This is a journey through the development of the main aircraft metallic materials, aluminum alloys, steels, titanium alloys and nickel superalloys. How the aircraft industry criteria changed through time and how did that impact material innovation and selection? It is an attempt to bring the history of the process and philosophy (if any) of materials selection for the aircraft industry and how it evolved overtime.

Aluminium is omnipresent around us. Its presence in our daily lives should not make us forget that it is also part of our heritage. The properties that characterize it: lightness, corrosion resistance have ensured its industrial success, but others, such as its ability to recycle, have led to the disappearance of many witnesses to the technological evolution of the metal. Through the examination of a number of heritage objects, in particular in the aeronautics sector, this article aims to identify the achievements but also the gaps in historical knowledge of the metal and its alloys. The forms of corrosion to which these materials are subject are in some cases relatively well known, while in others they are still poorly controlled. The lack of knowledge about the nature of aluminium objects and their state of conservation makes any diagnosis difficult, thus jeopardizing the long-term conservation of the associated objects. Proposals are being made to remedy this situation.

Nickel base alloys, named “superalloys”, are materials exhibiting incomparable properties at high temperature. They are so essential in aeronautical and space propulsion systems. The highest performance alloys which are implemented nowadays are the result of a continuous development throughout the last century of materials initially requested by the turbomachinery industry for ships propulsion or power production. The Second World War was at the origin of a dramatic expansion of these materials: they have been used in parts for aero-turboengines, which began to run at the end of the 30’s. Afterwards, the development of new processes for elaborating the alloys has allowed to significantly increase their resistance. This was achieved by acting on the chemical compositions first and then on the manufacturing processes implemented to get components. At the same time, the improvements in characterization technics and laboratory devices have enabled to closely investigate and consequently understand their mechanical and physical properties. Nowadays, those alloys have reached a high technology readiness level both in scientific and industrial domains.

This article deals with the involvement of mathematicians and mathematics in institutions relevant to aeronautics, focusing on the case of Institut de Mécanique des fluides de Lille (IMFL). After having given some elements on the landscape of fluid mechanics and aeronautics of the first thirty years of the 20th century, the article will look at the way in which mathematicians from Lille, very often in collaboration with physicists and engineers of the institute, are engaged in the creation and the evolution of the IMFL since 1929, and therefore in the creation of relationships between the university, industrial and aeronautical background. These mathematicians are also engaged in team work as well as on some mathematical problems of fluid mechanics in the context of aeronautics. This involvement may have been possible thanks to new mathematical tools from modern theories of analysis, probability and statistics.More generally, the article will highlight different professional trajectories whose scientific and institutional engagement in the IMFL recalls, in some cases, the same forms of involvement developed during scientific mobilization in military institutions during the Great War. It is in this context that we will show some examples of extra-mathematical relationships aimed at finding a balance between mathematical research, experimentation and practice.

As a concept, the interest for astroculture is increasing within the historiography of space exploration with publications on American, Russian and European societies. Yet, the eighteen manned flights with a French onboard have been largely neglected. After the undoubtable success of Thomas Pesquet’s six-month mission on the International Space Station between 2016 and 2017, it seems relevant to re-examine the role of French manned flights within the national social and cultural imaginary. Initiatives towards young audiences, local toponymic tributes and political statements in the media, among other things, give precious insights of French spationauts’ echo within the collective imaginary, years before Thomas Pesquet’s flight.

Aeronautics Companies in the Archive of the Instituto Nacional de Industria

The Law for the establishment of the Instituto Nacional de Industria (INI) on September 25th, 1941 was an initiative taken by the Spanish Government in order to set up its industrialization program. INI had enough financial and legal capacity for managing and controlling the companies which were incorporated or taken over, always under the Government’s overview. In INI’s Establishment Law the industrial activities were grouped into seven large categories, which in turn were divided into thirty-three subcategories, together with the investment plans, the aim was to set up an industrial plan, which gave priority to the industries for the country’s defense or to those which played a role in the development of the economic autarchy.

Bombing France: Solly Zuckerman and the “Transportation Plan”

During the Second World War France was, after Germany, the most bombed country in Europe. The worst bombings occurred in 1944, in the course of a planned operation very little known: the “Transportation Plan”. This plan was the brainchild of a British biologist, Solly Zuckerman, who knew nothing about the aerial warfare four years ago. Drafted to support the Allied landings in Normandy, the “Transportation Plan” affected the whole of France, resulting in many casualties and strong controversies. The subject of Allied bombings has been emerging for only a few years in French and especially British and American historiography. This study is based on a doctoral thesis completed by the author in 2015 at the University of Paris-IV Sorbonne, and published two years later under the title “La Stratégie de la Destruction”. It deals in particular the questions of military strategy, controversies about civilian casualties and the effectiveness of bombing.
