Il montre que les relations, initialement portées par la commande ouverte sur catalogue, ou fondées sur un cahier des charges prescriptif, ont peu à peu évolué vers des relations de délégation d’une partie des activités d’études et de développement et progressivement vers des partenariats portant sur la conception en commun d’ensembles modulaires complets et complexes. Les formes de contractualisation ont dès lors évolué du simple contrat marchand à des contrats plus durables dans lesquels le partage des risques industriels et financiers occupe une place centrale. Dans cette évolution, c’est aussi le statut de l’entreprise qui a fortement évolué, passant d’une grande entreprise intégrée à une « entreprise étendue » sollicitant de plus en plus des collaborations externes. The purpose of this article is to characterize the forms and contents of the subcontracting policy deployed by Aérospatiale and then by Airbus from the 1970s to the end of the 1980s. It shows that the relationships, initially based on open orders, catalogue orders or prescriptive specifications, have gradually evolved towards relationships of delegation of part of design and development activities and gradually towards partnerships to design complete and complex modular assemblies. The forms of contractualization have therefore evolved from simple commercial contracts to more long-term. Another feature of these relationships is a greater risk industrial and financial sharing. Le premier est relatif au changement de paradigme de conception et de fabrication pour chaque nouveau programme. Le second a trait à l’évolution du modèle d’organisation industrielle en lien avec les innovations technologiques. Ces deux traits marquent l’évolution de la trajectoire technique et organisationnelle. Dans cette trajectoire, les politiques de modularisation et d’externalisation ont joué un rôle majeur. Elles jouent notamment un rôle central dans l’émergence de nouveaux acteurs, les entreprises-pivots. Ces entreprises occupent une position critique dans la gestion des interfaces techniques et organisationnelles entre l’architecte-intégrateur et les entreprises participant à la conception et à la production des avions. The aim of this paper is to show that Airbus’s success can be attributed to two types of factors. First, each new aircraft model has produced a technological breakthrough in the design and manufacturing of aircraft. Secondly, Airbus’s capacity to evolve their industrial organisation model in keeping with technological transformations. In this trajectory, modularization and outsourcing policies have played major roles. In particular they play a major role in the emergence of new actors the pivot-firms.
