The article traces the dual genealogy of CATIA, the branch of computer science and the branch of the rationalization of production. The first branch is meant as the development of drawing software from the 1960s. The need for piloting industrial tools, the need for optimization of forms lead to the design of numerical tools for calculation and representation. The second branch refers to production requirements, leads to seek the best possible reuse, to reduce the design time. This double movement is not unique to aeronautics, but it takes a particular criticality because of the unbalanced power of American companies. Under this double perspective the article studies the prehistory of CATIA, CAD software (Computer Aided Design) now a world leader. It describes decision-making factors that led Avions Marcel Dassault to embark on the software venture, and their relationship, in the 1970s with public authorities. Those are fully aware of the productivity lag in French aeronautics and, more generally, in the industry, as evidenced by documents from Direction des programmes et des Affaires Industrielles de l’Armement ou de la Direction des industries électroniques et de l’informatique. As for bringing to the marketplace, as a software editor, a development that could have remained internal (this was the case with other aircraft manufacturers), explanatory tracks are put forward: one is the status of architect-integrator of Dassault (and not manufacturer) that makes it necessary to disseminate common tools to subcontractors, therefore beyond the enterprise. Then there is the business partnership in which IBM agrees to enter after benchmarking the Dassault application against several others. It is an bold bet for both sides, especially for Avions Marcel Dassault which has no experience in the field. We are in 1981. It is then the creation of a new company, Dassault Systèmes.

This article discusses the early beginnings of the cao, from the 50’s to the late 80’s. The road to the development of product model design systems (changes, calculations, manufacturing, tests…) is characterised by several traits. First of all, the methods at the basis of the initial models were the result of works that had no connection whatsoever, be it regarding the underlying theories or the members of the teams which worked on said issues. Such characteristic is, most certainly, related to the cultural origin of the pioneers, which favoured mathematical approaches or specific structures or the initial concepts. The industrial culture, specific to each country, the more or less pragmatic academic training of engineers as well as the choices made in design offices have also led to the favouring of one cao approach over the other. Finally, recalling the contributions of the pioneers on the subject, another characteristic maintains that if there is a software area which owes a lot to research led in France, it is undeniably that of Computer Aided Design.

This article follows the main stages of the Dassault Systems birth and growth, the chronology of the development of Catia and finally its worldwide success. The period considered begins with the launch of the “Mystère IV N programme” (1955) and the creation of an electronics department within Dassault Aviation and goes along until the Falcon 7X (2005) which was entirely developed in a three-dimensional virtual digital model. During the period, an essential part of cad development in France and in aeronautics emerged. The article gives a voice to key players. It shows, in particular, the important role of interpersonal relationships and technical and organisational challenges, which are often daring.

From A300 to A350: Technical and Organisational Innovation Trajectory of Airbus

The aim of this paper is to show that Airbus’s success can be attributed to two types of factors. First, each new aircraft model has produced a technological breakthrough in the design and manufacturing of aircraft. Secondly, Airbus’s capacity to evolve their industrial organisation model in keeping with technological transformations. In this trajectory, modularization and outsourcing policies have played major roles. In particular they play a major role in the emergence of new actors the pivot-firms. These firms have a critical position in management of technical and organizational interfaces between the architect-integrator and the firms participating in the design and production of aircrafts.

Launched in 2011, Curiosity is the first scientific complex to carry a laser on Mars. Integrated within a highly sophisticated spectroscopic instrument (ChemCam) and endowed with remarkable technical characteristics, this laser is undeniably an innovation. In order to better understand the nature of this innovation, we will use an original method of investigation in the history and philosophy technology field: genetic mecanology. Analysis will proceed in three stages. First, we propose a structural analysis of ChemCam in order to characterize the operation performed. Then, we will carry out a genetic analysis of the lasers family in order to trace the technical lineages which have led to the ChemCam’s laser. Finally, we will study the design processes that has engendered it. We will see that, more than an innovation, it is a customization, imposed by the very strong constraints coming from the associated medium.

From November 1926 to November 1933, fascist leader Italo Balbo, as under-secretary of State and then Minister of Aviation was a key supporter of the Italian aviation policy. Under his leadership, and in accordance with the orders and the personal desires of Mussolini, aviation is placed at the heart of the entertainment culture developed by the regime. Balbo not only carried forward the building of the military aviation fleet begun by his predecessor, General Alberto Bonzani, he also built up a political cult around aviation. This was the result of a powerful system of propaganda, led and controlled by Balbo in order to forge his image of the perfect reborn fascist man. He distinguished himself by learning how to fly a plane and flew not only for short trips across the peninsula but also for long journeys across the European continent and the Mediterranean and, in the early 30’s, by leading two transatlantic raids. By the time Balbo’s excessive propaganda and his increasing popularity led Mussolini to push him aside by naming him governor of Libya, the propaganda machine which he created and led is taken over by the Duce. From now on, he will the one to present himself as supreme pilot and will not hesitate to have a pilot licence granted to him in 1937.

From the Bay of Pigs to Lake Tanganyika: Non-State Armed Actors in the Congo Crisis, 1960-1967

Whereas the military dynamics of the Congo Crisis have received a significant amount of scholarly attention, the role played by groups of anti-Castro Cubans has tended to be somewhat ignored, or is not known. However, were it not for air and naval forces composed almost entirely of these exiles the effort to mount successful counterinsurgency operations in the Congo would, no doubt, have been impossible. All the while, the presence of the exile forces had to remain undetected: their sponsor – the Central Intelligence Agency- could not risk exacerbating already strained Cold War tensions, and a domestic context in which military intervention in an African country could endanger race relations. Nevertheless, due to its economic and strategic importance to the US of the time, it was crucial to ensure that the Congo did not fall under Soviet influence. With these considerations, the aim of this thesis was, therefore, to trace the conception of CIA covert operations back to its roots in order to discover what mechanisms were set up so that operations in the Congo could be implemented. The voyage of discovery starts in the 1940s – the decade in which the USA found itself obliged to create intelligence services capable of countering emerging Soviet threats – before moving on to an examination of clandestine operations in Guatemala, and in Cuba. The highly complex political, tribal and ethnic manoeuvres then coming under study, the focus of the thesis returns to Cuban exile forces and their contribution to counterinsurgency operations as a whole. Respecting the instrumentalist and realist theories of International Relations, this thesis raises the question of whether the use of private armies should not be considered as a viable option for the state when its own national armies are ill-equipped to manage conflict. This is particularly so in a geopolitical context which has seen an increase in the number of internal and external threats posed by Islamic terrorist groups in Africa, i.e. Boko Haram.
