This article offers an intellectual history of two pioneers of French astronautics, Robert Esnault‑Pelterie (1881‑1957) and Alexandre Ananoff (1910‑1992). Both of them were among the most active promoters of space flight in France in the 1930s. They both played a major role in sparking interest in astronautics, although they never really worked together. By examining their respective careers and the differences between the two men, this article clarifies Robert Esnault‑Pelterie’s place on the international stage among the thinkers who proved the scientific and technological feasibility of space flight

World War I is the first conflict to witness a large-scale use of air warfare. Air warriors are involved in a singular warfare that makes them different from land soldiers. Indeed, their material conditions bring into light a new type of “super” fighter (the “aces”), thereby fostering a specific war and death culture. This one is constituted by elements drawn from both antique and medieval imagination, as well as from the individualistic and adventurous spirit of flight’s pioneers in the very beginning of the 20th century.
