As a concept, the interest for astroculture is increasing within the historiography of space exploration with publications on American, Russian and European societies. Yet, the eighteen manned flights with a French onboard have been largely neglected. After the undoubtable success of Thomas Pesquet’s six-month mission on the International Space Station between 2016 and 2017, it seems relevant to re-examine the role of French manned flights within the national social and cultural imaginary. Initiatives towards young audiences, local toponymic tributes and political statements in the media, among other things, give precious insights of French spationauts’ echo within the collective imaginary, years before Thomas Pesquet’s flight.

Aeronautical and space activities have spread strong myths about the conquest of the sky, space and control of time. The economic trajectory of Toulouse has been characterized for a century by the development and consolidation of aeronautical and later on, spatial activities which have given a techno-scientific coloration to this city, quite unique in Europe. Moreover, this industrial specialization has contributed to the development of a specific urban mythology, sustained and renewed over time by local figures in aviation, construction and aeronautical testing, and today space flights. Toulouse's productive system, as well as its territorial roots and its important functions of innovation all contribute to the renewal of a mythology associated with aerospace productions in general and with representations of the city in particular.
