This article gives an overview of theories developed since Antiquity, in order to explain the movement of planets, starting from the great interrogation of astronomers on their retrograde movement. The author examines the evolution of ideas about the rotation of spheres and the movements of planets (according to a geocentric model with epicycles and deferents, or according to the heliocentric models of Aristarchus and Copernicus), as well as ideas about the transition from regularity to variability, and those about the circular movements with elliptic movements (Kepler's laws). Finally, it describes some accounts on the causes of these movements (the gravitation developed by Hooke and Newton). First centered on the movements of the Earth around the Sun, the article enlarges its perspectives to the Moon, as well as comets and other planets of the Solar system, by analyzing the contributions of differential and integral calculus, especially through Laplace’s works in the 18th century.

The rejection of the geocentric model, that was a crucial legacy from ancient astronomy, became the major paradigm shift brought by Copernicus’ discovery. But from a strictly scientific point of view, and as decisive as was the Copernican revolution in the 16th century, the new representation of the Cosmos remained in various points dependent on the one that was reversed. The following generations actually worked to refine the heliocentric scheme of the De revolutionibus orbium coelestium by clearing off its bulky rags. What part of the ancient legacy contained in Copernic’s planetary system was to be preserved, amended or rejected? What consequences did this have on the spatial representation that his disciples were trying to conceive, by correcting the imperfect sketches he had left to them? How to make use of the empirical data collected in the observation of planets, and how to reunite them with a geometric configuration likely to explain celestial mechanics? These are the main questions that this contribution attempts to answer, focusing on the influence of three scientists who played a decisive role in this field of cosmology: Nicolas Copernicus, Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler.

Throughout the early-modern era, the conceptualization of the solar system as a coherent epistemological entity has been based on precise observations of the planets and the measurement of their distances and movements. This article explores these two empirical pathways that helped to shape the solar system. The instrumental breakthrough introduced by the telescope in the 17th century was initially intended to support the heliocentric design of the solar system. Subsequently, it is a kind of “natural history” of the sky that served as a framework for interpretation of observations. Indeed, the measurements of the universe are first of all a way for Kepler to seek celestial harmony, but this requirement of the Renaissance gradually disappears in favour of an exploration of the solar system, considered as a field of experimentation.

The publication of De Revolutionibus in 1543 is considered as a major break in the history of astronomy, marking the beginning of the Copernican revolution. But the Copernicus’ heliocentric model was still largely dependent on the scholastic paradigm, with a cosmos inherited from ancient knowledge: a closed and limited milieu located beyond the orb of the Moon, made and filled with ether. It was only Tycho Brahe’s and Galileo’s astronomical observations that challenged these old conceptions of the supralunar world. New theories then emerged, and scholars confronted with each other about the nature of this interplanetary space: for some of them, known as “the vacuists”, it was totally empty; for some others, the so-called “etherians”, it was filled with swirls, made of subtle matter… And what about the force of gravitation, the propagation of light and sound in interplanetary space?

The hypothesis of plurality of worlds had notable effects on French literature in the 17th century. After Montaigne, it appeared in major writings by Cyrano de Bergerac, Pascal, Molière, La Fontaine, La Bruyère, and, of course, Fontenelle. Indeed, the writers knew this idea. They had debates in various fields like philosophy, science, theology, and we can therefore identify in their writings various influences, skeptical or religious, libertine or scholarly. All of this is well-known. The article rather focuses on the new hypothesis’ formal consequences for literature. It explores interviews, fragments, for example regarding the rule of the three units, or the diversity implemented by the author of the Fables ... These effects are variable, sometimes contradictory, but we gain to understand, at least briefly, how this “old new” hypothesis fostered aesthetic inventions in the literary field during what is called, in a noble but reducing way, the Great Century.

The aristocratic loneliness of the aviator and its brave imaginary were at the heart of the story of air warfare for the broad public during the First World War in all belligerent countries. In the aftermath of the conflict, this paradigm inspired fascism in Italy and contributed to develop a ritual of sacrifice and commemoration that was part of the project to create a “new man”. This funeral cult had a dual origin: the nationalist propaganda built by the French press around the heroic figure of Georges Guynemer; the funeral orations composed by the poet-soldier Gabriele D'Annunzio in honor of Italian military pilots, especially the transalpine flying ace Francesco Baracca. With this ideological and rhetorical background, the fascist regime founded a triple liturgy. Under the leadership of Aviator Hiero Balbo, Under-Secretary of State and Minister of Aeronautics (1926-1933), it first began to celebrate fallen pilots’ contempt for death in air raids, and made for them great public funerals. The war of aggression against Ethiopia (1935) became an opportunity to spread a genuine mysticism of imitation and revenge of the few airmen who perished in these operations. From 1931 onwards, a mourning pedagogy was thereby developed, which gave to Mussolini an almost thaumaturgical gift of erasing the deceased airmen parents’ suffering, in the context of spectacular demonstrations enhancing the collective force of the Italian Air Force, where individual sacrifice was presented as the condition of the perpetuation of the national community.

Aeronautical and space activities have spread strong myths about the conquest of the sky, space and control of time. The economic trajectory of Toulouse has been characterized for a century by the development and consolidation of aeronautical and later on, spatial activities which have given a techno-scientific coloration to this city, quite unique in Europe. Moreover, this industrial specialization has contributed to the development of a specific urban mythology, sustained and renewed over time by local figures in aviation, construction and aeronautical testing, and today space flights. Toulouse's productive system, as well as its territorial roots and its important functions of innovation all contribute to the renewal of a mythology associated with aerospace productions in general and with representations of the city in particular.

World War I is the first conflict to witness a large-scale use of air warfare. Air warriors are involved in a singular warfare that makes them different from land soldiers. Indeed, their material conditions bring into light a new type of “super” fighter (the “aces”), thereby fostering a specific war and death culture. This one is constituted by elements drawn from both antique and medieval imagination, as well as from the individualistic and adventurous spirit of flight’s pioneers in the very beginning of the 20th century.
