This article deals with the involvement of mathematicians and mathematics in institutions relevant to aeronautics, focusing on the case of Institut de Mécanique des fluides de Lille (IMFL). After having given some elements on the landscape of fluid mechanics and aeronautics of the first thirty years of the 20th century, the article will look at the way in which mathematicians from Lille, very often in collaboration with physicists and engineers of the institute, are engaged in the creation and the evolution of the IMFL since 1929, and therefore in the creation of relationships between the university, industrial and aeronautical background. These mathematicians are also engaged in team work as well as on some mathematical problems of fluid mechanics in the context of aeronautics. This involvement may have been possible thanks to new mathematical tools from modern theories of analysis, probability and statistics.More generally, the article will highlight different professional trajectories whose scientific and institutional engagement in the IMFL recalls, in some cases, the same forms of involvement developed during scientific mobilization in military institutions during the Great War. It is in this context that we will show some examples of extra-mathematical relationships aimed at finding a balance between mathematical research, experimentation and practice.

Aeronautics Companies in the Archive of the Instituto Nacional de Industria

The Law for the establishment of the Instituto Nacional de Industria (INI) on September 25th, 1941 was an initiative taken by the Spanish Government in order to set up its industrialization program. INI had enough financial and legal capacity for managing and controlling the companies which were incorporated or taken over, always under the Government’s overview. In INI’s Establishment Law the industrial activities were grouped into seven large categories, which in turn were divided into thirty-three subcategories, together with the investment plans, the aim was to set up an industrial plan, which gave priority to the industries for the country’s defense or to those which played a role in the development of the economic autarchy.

Space is often presented as a single and homogeneous area. However, it is composed by distinct regions. Among these regions, deep space is mainly oriented to exploration and discovery. An extensive bibliography is already describing human activities that take place there. Through history, geography or futures studies, it describes an environment where humans rarely set foot and where the immediate and geopolitical concerns are low. This bibliography has its own codes, including a strong prospective dimension. It also has its own publishing dynamic and its own audience. This bibliography requires a series of questions and opens track for historiographical and historical studies that examine the connection that human societies have with this deep space.
