Generate the World. Circulations of the Genesis Models of the Solar System from the 17th to the 19th Century

Cosmogony was first taken up by religious approaches. The seventeenth century marked a break: the literary field as well as the scientific field were the scene of a rational reappropriation of the history of the creation of the Universe. Descartes thus introduced a tension between the idea of a creation of the world that would follow the divine principles of perfection and the progressive evolution of the Universe. Cyrano de Bergerac seemed to have freed himself from religious requirements to imagine a new cosmogony. The seventeenth century thus saw a pluralisation of interpretations of the origin of the solar system.

This article deals with the observations of Jupiter in the 17th century. Two types of observation gradually emerged. On the one hand, the study of satellite movements supported a science of ephemerides that put measurement at the centre of investigations. Cassini, Hodierna and Ole Rømer fitted into modern mathesis which aims at a general coherence of a measurable universe. The observation of Jupiter’s spots and bands (by N. Zucchi, F.M. Grimadi, G.N. Zupi then Cassini and Hooke) was an opportunity to develop analogies with the Earth. Identification and comparison also participated in the unification of the solar system, as a whole governed by the same physical laws.

Throughout the early-modern era, the conceptualization of the solar system as a coherent epistemological entity has been based on precise observations of the planets and the measurement of their distances and movements. This article explores these two empirical pathways that helped to shape the solar system. The instrumental breakthrough introduced by the telescope in the 17th century was initially intended to support the heliocentric design of the solar system. Subsequently, it is a kind of “natural history” of the sky that served as a framework for interpretation of observations. Indeed, the measurements of the universe are first of all a way for Kepler to seek celestial harmony, but this requirement of the Renaissance gradually disappears in favour of an exploration of the solar system, considered as a field of experimentation.

This paper explores the spatial, political and economic logics that led to the foundation of various laboratories devoted to space research in France between the 1960s to the 1970s. In Toulouse, an organized decentralization, combining some technical components of the CNES with major aeronautical schools, is largely supported and determined by local forces. The Marseilles Astrophysics Laboratory was born from a conjunctural association with the Aeronautics Department, apart from major regional development initiatives. Conversely, the Ionospheric Research Group, based in Orléans, is totally caught up in the decentralization policy of the 1960s, aiming at rebalancing the scientific forces on the territory. These three cases help to characterize very different forms of spatial planning by the establishment of scientific resources. Indeed, there is no uniform historical model to describe the geographical distribution of space skills. The transfer (or creation) of space research institutions depend on operations which sometimes are only a small part of broader spatial planning policies, but they may also emerge from very specific local logics.
