On 5 May 1927, Pierre de Saint Roman and his crew took off from Saint Louis in Senegal, bound for Recife in Brazil. This raid was the first non-stop attempt to cross the South Atlantic. They were never found; only a raft was picked up by Brazilian fishermen on 18 June 1927 off the Brazilian coast. The components of this raft were formally identified as belonging to the Goliath Farman F 61 aircraft in which they were flying. The raid was an opportunity to forge close links with Brazil under the aegis of the Maison de l’Amérique Latine.
