The failures of the Nasa Mars missions in the 1990s were the symbols of the new policy of Daniel Goldin, Nasa’s administrator between 1992 and 2001. Those failures showed the issues of this policy applied to the exploration on another planet. My work is constructed around the reasons of these failures and their political impact at Nasa. The first mission that is covered in my work, Mars Observer, was not built and operated in this new policy era, but it seems impossible for me to understand the failures of 1998-99 without apprehending the first one. My work is also about linking those failures. My thesis is not a summary of the Goldin’s policy though, it is a contextualising work of the Mars exploration with the link between the failures in the 1990s and the recent successes of the following missions.

The opposition of a part of the Catholic Church to Copernicanism, and more generally to heliocentrism, lasted between 1616 and 1741. Despite the censures of the Holy Office, those among the Catholics who defended the central sun tried to make the new cosmology acceptable, in addition to the scientific demonstrations, by arguments of a symbolic nature, which are studied in this paper. How can one become the advocate of a cause that appears to be so controversial? Our answer emphasizes that between the two solutions adopted by certain partisans of heliocentrism, the modernization of exegesis and the praise of the harmony of the heliocentric system, the second had the most immediate influence in the scientific writings and in poetry. If neither of these two attempts finally managed to convince some elements of the ecclesiastical hierarchy and some believers, the debates profoundly changed the representation of the universe among the Catholics; and thus, beyond the rapid obsolescence of the Copernican cosmos, scientific discoveries, with the echo of poetry, revealed a universe too vast to have been made for humanity alone, where the divine power aroused both terror and delight.

Chinese Cosmogonies, Rational Philosophers of Ancient China and their Influence on Leibniz

Chinese philosophers have long been interested in cosmogony, creating consecutive theories dominated by the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) on the one hand, and by a dualistic cosmology through the idea of Yin and Yang on the other. It is possible to find references, as early as the 4th century B.C., to symbolic correlations of the presence of the five elements acting as forces shaping the cosmos, and discussions about how the Yin and Yang operated in the universe, first one then the other dominating in a wave-like succession. These theories derive in broad terms from the Chinese inclination to look for harmony. In social terms, these mental constructions reflect on the social organization, weighing on the gender structures, the celebrations and festivals, and the societal hierarchy, amongst others. When encountering European astronomers, the rivalry between cosmologists and astronomical innovators confronts the philosophical thought and the traditional science from China, dated at least from the 3rd century B.C., and the mathematical and experimental scientist from Europe. In some respects, however, it awakens a philosophical debate which would bring Leibniz close to neoconfucianism, (originated in the Tang Dynasty between 618 and 907, with Han Yu and Li Ao, and followed by Zhou Dunyi and Zhu Xi in the Song Dynasty, between 960 and 1279, and by Wang Yangming in the Ming Dynasty, between 1368 and 1644), through the work of the Jesuits in China. It is important to keep these data in mind, although this article analyzes mainly the events occurred during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) that involved Leibniz and his thought. This article intends to analyze how the interest of Leibniz in China and Confucianism, through the Jesuits, influenced his thought, as well as the European image of Chinese classic texts in what concerns cosmogony, after a swift glance at Chinese cosmogonic myths.

Descartes’ conception of what is meant by “planetary system” can be studied in two texts. In the treaty The World, he did not publish in his lifetime, and in The Principles of Philosophy (1644, for latin edition, 1647 for french translation), he exposes the basic points of his cosmology, the principles of which are the same as those observed on Earth. Its universe, whose expanse is “indefinite” and entirely composed of matter, which excludes any vacuum. This matter is divided into three broad categories of “elements.” Tiny, very fast and luminous particles are the first element, of which the Sun and stars are formed. The “sky” (interplanetary space) mainly contains small rounded figure parts of the second element. The imposing masses of planets and comets (third element) evolve there. During creation, God gave the universe a certain quantity of motion. It animates all the bodies but there is conservation of motion when they knock together. In this dynamic, purely mechanical, each part of matter, struck by another, heads in a straight line but turns on itself. However, its trajectory, held up by the environment, tends to curve by giving rise to vortices. Around a central star, the matter current of the second element carries planets and satellites, while comets crosses several nearby vortices on the periphery. Highly speculative, this wortex cosmology was compromised, shortly after the death of Descartes (1650), by the highlighting of the vacuum and, above all, by Newtonian cosmology which ruined its foundations.

The publication in 1687 of the Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica constitutes a pivotal moment in the conceptualization and normalization of the physical sciences. The theory of universal gravitation is part of the process of mathematizing science and is formulated by Isaac Newton by the three laws of motion. The unification of terrestrial physics – the fall of bodies – and celestial – the movement of the planets – constitutes a fundamental break with the Aristotelian paradigm but is opposed to Cartesian concepts which are proposing another physics. The calculations of the terrestrial degree (1735-1745) and of the return of the comet observed in 1682 constitute facts which confirm the theory of gravity which is imposed while retaining the concept of ether.
