Aviation Pioneers’ Correspondence as Sources for Social and Cultural History: Reflection and Methodology on the Wright Brothers’ Letters (1900-1908)

This article is a presentation about interests and practices with private archive for social and cultural history. This kind of documents opens new perspectives for historical methodology as well as new paths for investigation in the field of personal history. Here we try to understand their usefulness and importance in the study of social networks in the beginning of the 20th century. Through the letters of the Wright brothers, who were the first to fly in Ohio in 1905, we can explain their function in the aeronautic network before 1914, as well as we can understand the position of this network among other aviation pioneers.

Subsequent to the increasing popularity of both cycling and motoring, at the turn of the 20th century, flying comes as a major step in the invention process of the mobility techniques thus opening the way to new feats, new records. In this article we shall analyse the impact of such momentum and the construction of a new imaginary world. Our purpose is to focus on the conquest of skies through representations which a strongly expanding press contributed to create before 1914. More specifically we call into question those representations of flying as a sports activity at the ‘‘Belle Époque’’. We have chosen ‘‘La Vie au grand Air’’ as it proved active in building and/or reinforcing the sports image of aeronautics and its usual practices. It also participated in promoting the image of pilots, new sports heroes, even though at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries sports are rather among the most prominent figures of cultural and social modernism.

Today as in the past, history is used by the stakeholders of the French aeronautic industry to deliver a positive message. The historical communication is part of the history of representations. However, the storytelling or the art of building a narrative in order to reinforce a positive image, may, in some cases, blur the exact analysis of reality and bring inappropriate strategies. Aviation industry during Second World War is an interesting example of this "cognitive isolation bubble" accompanying irrelevant decisions. As early as 1944, glorifying and unifying theories are mainly disclosed. They focus on resistance, sabotage and support the idea of an industry having preseved its capacities, ready to rise from the ashes. The Franco-German aerospace collaboration, with its joint program of construction of aircraft in July 1941, and the specialization of this industry in low-end motors and aircraft are ignored. This article aims at understanding how this discourse based on resistancialism has distorted reality and how this wrong diagnosic may have contributed to the difficulties of aeronautics industry’s rebirth after the war.

Occupations and technical changes in the Toulouse aeronautics industry from 1960 to 1980

Between 1960 and 1980, while France is going through a significant crisis of work, numerous technical and technological changes occur in the aviation industry - especially through the development of data processing - and transforming professions and the nature of work. All professions are affected by these changes, but all have not experienced the same trajectory. Thus, through the study of some representative careers in aviation industry (tracer, boilermaker, lathe and milling machine operators), we were able to determine the various possible consequences of technical change: loss of jobs, development of expertise, downsizing, introduction of new working methods, opportunities for social promotion in some categories, improvements in working conditions, etc. Although the interpretation of these consequences may be different, depending on individuals and their feelings or personal history, one should keep in mind that the modernization of the means of production was an unavoidable trend to increase productivity.

From 1945 to 1966, the evolution of the French Air Force largely depends on technological innovations. The aim of this thesis is to analyze how it became able – both technologically and structurally – to pass from a situation in which it was considered as an old-fashioned entity to the head of the national defense system, thus establishing itself as the third Air Force power. To do so, we identify three essential periods, which illustrate its shift to develop progressively its technological expertise. From 1945 to 1950, it meets several challenges such as technological transfers and jet-powered planes in the early years of the Cold War. From 1951 until 1958, it follows a fast modernization trend in spite of the Colonial Wars, as depicted through the development of aeronautical programs and the use of missiles, in a context of American Help. From 1959 to 1966, the French Air Force then adapts to both nuclear-based weapons and strategies, such as piloted strategic armament systems Mirage IV and structural transfers taken out of the military command integrated by NATO.
