Pourtant, bien que les travaux les concernant pendant la Grande Guerre soient très nombreux, on ne compte que peu d’écrits concernant la campagne de France. Cet article, synthèse de travaux de mémoire, s’interroge donc sur l’état de l’héroïsation des pilotes français et les évolutions susceptibles d’être à l’œuvre. Le premier temps du développement constate la continuité du mythe héroïque associé à la chasse, et la pérennité des méthodes traditionnelles utilisées par le civil et le militaire. Le second temps se penche quant à lui sur les évolutions du mythe, qui se distingue par la mise en avant du collectif et l’émergence de nouveaux moyens de communication comme la photographie. La campagne de France se révèle en effet être une période charnière dans la consécration et la célébration des pilotes de chasse français. The heroic dimension of fighter pilots and their depiction as modern times knights, are an effective reality in the Armée de l’Air traditions. While there were many studies about World War I pilots, there is not as much research regarding the Battle of France. This article, as a synthesis of a mémoire, seeks to interrogate the heroic condition of French pilots, as well as potential evolutions in the definition of war heroes. First of all, this study establishes that there is indeed a perpetuation of the myth of fighter pilots, as well as a continuity of methods used by both civilian and military institutions for that matter. Secondly, it is clear that some evolutions occurred during the Battle of France, the main one being the glorification of fighter pilots as a whole group, rather than as individuals. C’est son accident mortel qui la fait passer du statut de célébrité à celui d’icône nationale, voire de sainte laïque, entraînant une réappropriation et une mise à l’exemple sur le registre de la femme exceptionnelle. Il s’agit alors d’évoquer un certain nombre des aspects entourant les représentations des aviatrices, ultra médiatisées par la presse et autres canaux, à travers son parcours singulier, et de rendre compte d’une certaine fabrique de l’exceptionnel au féminin à travers une profession rare et célébrée. The life of Hélène Boucher (1908-1934), famous aviatrix of the inter wars, is an illustration of the French feminine aviation phenomenon and the challenges of her representation. From her formation to the realization of her achievements through her collaboration with industries and the public ministry, the seizure of her life and her short career crystallize her different dimensions. Her fatal accident transformed her from a celebrity to a national icon and even a secular saint, leading to an appropriation of her identity by the media. She is set as an example of exceptional women. Thus, several aspects of the representations of aviatrixes must be considered.
