The Italian writer Curzio Malaparte staged in 1951 a feature film called Il Cristo proibito. This film was his only foray into filmmaking. The author of Kaputt and The Skin had at first planned to publish the fictionalized version of this title with Bompiani edition, but the project never came through. The film, on the other hand, was presented in competition during the 1951 edition of the Cannes Film Festival. This article analyzes its critical reception after it was launched, and also after a digital edition was released in 2012. It then proposes to position the film in relation to the neorealist cinema of the time, and, most importantly, after emphasizing the constitutive features of Baroque art, to assess to what extent it may be viewed as «cinematographic Baroque».

Back from five years of war, Curzio Malaparte is 22 years old when he writes and publishes Viva Caporetto!, both a leading personal testimony and a political interpretation of the Great War. Against the official propaganda, he chose as emblem of the heroism of the trench soldier and hope of revenge of a despised people, Caporetto, the great retreat of the Italian troops under the advance of the Austrian armies which marked, in October 1917, the most painful military crisis that Italy has known. Three times censored between 1921 and 1923, Viva Caporetto! was an explosive charge against the young Italy that was being built on the memory of a victorious Great War. This uncommon story of war marks, at the same time as the entry into literature of the young Malaparte, the matrix of part of his work.
