As part of a study day devoted exclusively to Carlo Goldoni at the University of Nancy II in 2014, the article focuses on the decisive role played by actress Maddalena Marliani in the construction of the figures in the Corallina cycle of the Goldonian period at the Teatro Sant’Angelo, particularly between 1750 and 1753. The impact on her characters of Corallina’s personality as an actress is notorious in all the comedies of the period in which she appears, all the more so as we know the extent to which Goldoni first relies on the ‘carattere sotto gli occhi’ of the actors before inventing a character (preface to La castalda, ed. Paperini, 1755). The article sketches out the characteristics of Corallina’s figure through a horizontal reading of the two plays that frame the cycle (La Gastalda 1751 and La Locandiera, 1753), thus tracing the snippets of the actress’s dramaturgical repertoire – taking all accounts, her ‘generico’, to use a term proper to the theater dell’arte from which she emerged, before working with Goldoni. The appendix - in the form of a comparative table of recurring lines, situations and scenes in the two plays - provides concrete support for these hypotheses.

The author of this study aims to explore the cultural exchanges between Italy and France that influenced the development of theater in both countries during the 19th century. The focus is specifically on the work of the French playwright Eugène Scribe, whose plays were widely adapted for Italian repertories, particularly in the 1830s. The adaptation process involved significant linguistic and structural changes, resulting in versions that were often quite different from the originals, yet still able of engaging the Italian audience. By conducting a comparative study of the manuscripts translated by the actress Gaetana Rosa and Scribe’s original texts, the author seeks to investigate the informal ways in which these works were introduced to Italy and to understand the reasons behind their remarkable success.

“Translating Fuorigioco: creating turmoil in language” is a reflection on the French translation of Lisa Nur Sultan's piece Fuorigioco/Hors-jeu. Translation creates crisis in language, by definition, forcing the translator to recreate in the target language a signifier system that attempts to reproduce a ‘signified’ as similar as possible to that in the source language. The criterion for the validity of this equivalence in the new language is the ability to resolve the initial crisis of expression in which the translator first finds himself. To do so, he must succeed in creating a new text in his own language in which the original meaning can come alive and be vibrant again, in other words, he must create ‘turmoil’ in his own language. This is most critical in theatrical translation. Theatre relies on a fragile illusion of truth, rendered even more fragile by the fact when a play is translated the characters express themselves in a language that is not their ‘own’. This means that the audience has to enter into a pact of « ‘translatory fiction’. To conclude, recreating the text in a new language obliges the translator to resort to adaptation; he must pay great attention to rhythm and be inventive, also in transposing words that can be defined as ‘iconic’. The term ‘iconic’ refers to words with a whole world of meaning, that have an immediate and transversal effectiveness within a linguistic group.

From among the most famous novellas of the Decameron, the last one has enjoyed a huge success since the XIV century anywhere in Europe and particularly in Italy. Nevertheless, the story of Griselda continues to be an ambiguous topic: it is excessively violent to be a comedy and it has a too joyful final to form part of the tragic theater of the XVII century. In the Opera, it is not Metastasio but Apostolo Zeno who, since 1701, brings back in vogue to Venice the character of Griselda. The paper initially proposes to analyze Zeno’s libretto to demonstrate how it points out a topical concern of the Venetian society: marital status set up by the Council of Trento and its sociocultural consequences. In the aftermath of the great success of Zeno’s Opera, something about twenty works are put in music in the XVIII century, particularly by Albinoni, Scarlet, Bononcini or Vivaldi. The last mentioned is inspired by a libretto reworked by Goldoni that will provideus with the argument to deal, in the second part of the paper, with the musical and literary dimension of the versions of Griselda to the Opera.
