Starting from year 1949 Eugenio Montale had been fully occupied as journalist for the Corriere della Sera. Montale used to refer to this task as « second profession ». To this very activity are linked the poetries that compose the fourth collection of Satura, these poetries are characterized by a strong tendency towards prose. In these compositions are present themes recalling stylistic elements extracted from formerly written newspaper’s articles. It is the case, for example, of the second poetry of Due prose veneziane inspired by the encounter with Ernest Hemingway, happened in 1954 in Venice, as this happening had already been described by Montale as journalist. In this analysis the poetry is compared to the obituary composed for the death of the American writer, dated 4 July 1961 and titled Schietta umanità. From this comparison numerous and precise correspondences emerge, that can lead to assign to the newspaper’s article the value of pre-text in the second of the Due prose veneziane.
