Based on an essay by Thomas Mann on the link between Michelangelo's Neoplatonism and the artist's perception of his ageing body, the article returns to texts in which a powerful senile eroticism is asserted, leading Michelangelo to confess a fundamental inability to renounce desire. This failure invites a comparison with the impossible conversion of Petrarch, who also confesses his inability to “limit his desire” in the Secretum. From then on, Michelangelo's poetry, which traditionally escapes Petrarchanism in part, as much by the choice of a language contaminated by Florentineisms as by an ostensible admiration for Dante, thus reconnects with the essence of Petrarchan poetry.

From among the most famous novellas of the Decameron, the last one has enjoyed a huge success since the XIV century anywhere in Europe and particularly in Italy. Nevertheless, the story of Griselda continues to be an ambiguous topic: it is excessively violent to be a comedy and it has a too joyful final to form part of the tragic theater of the XVII century. In the Opera, it is not Metastasio but Apostolo Zeno who, since 1701, brings back in vogue to Venice the character of Griselda. The paper initially proposes to analyze Zeno’s libretto to demonstrate how it points out a topical concern of the Venetian society: marital status set up by the Council of Trento and its sociocultural consequences. In the aftermath of the great success of Zeno’s Opera, something about twenty works are put in music in the XVIII century, particularly by Albinoni, Scarlet, Bononcini or Vivaldi. The last mentioned is inspired by a libretto reworked by Goldoni that will provideus with the argument to deal, in the second part of the paper, with the musical and literary dimension of the versions of Griselda to the Opera.

The National Library of Rio de Janeiro possesses an outstanding variety of Italian books, such as 506 manuscripts, a huge number of incunabula papers and hundred of 16th- and 17th-century volumes. Relying on local data – unavailable outside the Library and far from being exhaustive –, the present paper draws a first survey of the resources offered by the Library and gives specific information on some of the 15th- to 17th-century books to be found among the older collections.
