Acqua di colonia by the Frosini/Timpano company (2016) is a political performance. However, it would be wrong to define it as engaged, at least in the traditional sense of the word. Far from reproducing the stage-audience dialectic characteristic of the teatro di narrazione (Ascanio Celestini, Marco Paolini, Marco Baliani), the Roman duo of artists undermines the foundations of the complicit relationship between the narrator and their audience. By prompting spectators to become aware of the origins of racist sentiments without inciting them to action, Acqua di colonia offers an aesthetic of discomfort that challenges the spectators' perception and sense of responsibility.

Pensare l’inattuale : ermeneutica del Teatro Umano all’Université Lyon 3

This article reflects on the role of Italian-language university theatre at Lyon 3 University, advocating a radically anti-utilitarian conception of art. In opposition to the contemporary tendency to regard theatre merely as a pedagogical, therapeutic, or professional tool, it explores the value of aesthetic, cultural, and ethical experience as a means of shaping future citizens rather than simply future workers. Drawing on the theories of Jacques Lacan, Günther Anders, Giorgio Strehler, Paolo Grassi, and Romano Luperini, the article examines how Italian-language theatre can be conceived as a space of resistance to the imperatives of efficiency and performance that characterize the contemporary university. Its aim is to demonstrate how artistic practice may be understood as a genuine process of sublimation contributing to the construction of subjectivity. Through the acceptance and understanding of the Lacanian notion of the “void,” creative space can emerge as an incandescent site of symbolization, resisting the reduction of human experience to mere productivity.

This article analyses university theatre as a space for the transmission and reworking of Italianità within the French university context. Drawing on the experience of La Mascareta workshop at Sorbonne Université, it examines the role of the teacher-director in the selection of Italian dramatic repertoire, from the Renaissance to contemporary writing, and its pedagogical, cultural, and political implications. The concept of juvenilization of early texts is developed as a process of scenic reactivation grounded in translation, body and voice, and attention to effects on the audience, positioning university theatre as a site of experimentation and political commitment.

The article analyzes the Italian to French translation choices, by Jacques de Fonteny in his Bravacheries du Capitaine Spavente (1608), translated from the Bravure del Capitan Spavento (Francesco Andreini, 1607). As a co-manager of the Hôtel de Bourgogne theatre, the author only translates the first six Ragionamenti out of the sixty-five from the first part of the volume. He probably does so out of personal interest as the translation is dedicated to Charles d’Angennes, Vidame du Mans. This study aims to elucidate whether De Fonteny’s French version respects the Italianness of the comedy dell’arte’s Capitano, especially his language and his characteristics, or whether it’s an exercise of mere erudition, juste made of archaisms and linguistic Italianisms effects.

The article explores the concept of italianità and multilingualism in the comedies of the Gherardi collection, examining the origins of clichés about Italian actors in the theatrical scene of Baroque Paris. Italian theatre in France, often reduced to commedia dell’arte, is presented in this context as an art form characterized by improvisation and linguistic play between Italian and French. However, the Gherardi collection filters and adapts Italian for the French audience, smoothing out dialectal peculiarities and creating an idealized image of italianità. Multilingualism not only reflects the actors’ linguistic skills but also becomes a means of artistic and technical legitimization in relation to their French rivals, in a triangulation involving the Comédie-Italienne, the Comédie-Française, and the Opera theatre.

The play Ultima violenza, the artistic testament of Sicilian playwright Giuseppe Fava, who was tragically murdered by the mafia in 1984, was translated and adapted for performance in French courts four years after his death. Through extensive research and direct testimonies from directors Pascal Papini and Louis Beyler, this study delves into the French adaptation of the text, reconstructs the mise-en-scène, and evaluates the critical reception. A comparative analysis of the two distinct productions reveals the cultural divergences between the two countries while simultaneously underscoring the shared necessity of theatre’s political function.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, two plays regarding Dante’s exile (Dante et Béatrix, L’Exil du Dante) were censored by the successive French governments and their performances at the théâtre de l’Odéon were forbidden. This article intends to analyze the motives of such governmental censorship in order to determine each play’s characteristics and ultimately situate them within the larger scale of standardized censorship in France. This study finally focuses on what appears as one of the main motives of censorship: the cultural transfer between the figure of Dante and French national writer in exile, Victor Hugo.
