Domenico Sauli, born and raised in a prestigious family of merchants and bankers on full economic and political rise in Genoa between the fifteenth and the sixteenth century, left his city for Milan, where he held high offices first for Francis II Sforza, then for Charles V, before being accused of embezzlement and being banished from the court. The present study, that is interested particularly to the memoir of Domenico Sauli and the letters copied and attached herewith, wishes to present the emblematic course of its author who decides to leave Genoa to settle in Milan.

This article is focused on the well known historian of Italian Journalism, Paolo Murialdi, and aims to analyze his still unknown past and his first experience as a reporter. He grew up in Genoa, than he adhered to the partisans in the Second War World and settled in Milan in the Post War period. Here, where he lived steadily, he became a professional journalist, writing for newspapers and magazines, like the prestigious Corriere della Sera and the revolutionary Il Giorno, without mentioning his career as a militant reporter for the social democratic sheet L’Umanità.

The office of « Protector of prisoners » performed by Alessandro Verri in Milan during the years of « Il Caffè », is the least studied aspect of his career at the service of Lombardy Enlightenment. The nature of this office, which enabled him to acquire a working knowledge of the prison system in the Milanese state, is explained in this essay including four previously unpublished texts (three petitions for mercy and a defence against a man convicted of murder) discovered thanks to a systematic study of the Verri Archives’ manuscripts, kept in Milan by the Mattioli Foundation. These texts, written between 1763-1765 and so contemporaneous with the essay On Crimes and Punishments by Beccaria, shed light on the story of the collective reflection of the « Accademia dei Pugni » (Academy of Fists) on criminal law.
