The office of « Protector of prisoners » performed by Alessandro Verri in Milan during the years of « Il Caffè », is the least studied aspect of his career at the service of Lombardy Enlightenment. The nature of this office, which enabled him to acquire a working knowledge of the prison system in the Milanese state, is explained in this essay including four previously unpublished texts (three petitions for mercy and a defence against a man convicted of murder) discovered thanks to a systematic study of the Verri Archives’ manuscripts, kept in Milan by the Mattioli Foundation. These texts, written between 1763-1765 and so contemporaneous with the essay On Crimes and Punishments by Beccaria, shed light on the story of the collective reflection of the « Accademia dei Pugni » (Academy of Fists) on criminal law.

First published in 1606, Giulio Cesare Croce's novel Le sottilissime astuzie di Bertoldo was an immediate « best seller », circulating widely both within and beyond Italy. Detailed research on the different versions in different languages – Greek, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Romanian, English, Bulgarian etc. – has already been carried out, but sustained interest in the work's fate is in fact of recent date. The first handwritten translations, of which at least two are extant, were made in Russia during the 18th century. These texts, some of them unpublished, turned up again in the form of popular literature up to the end of the 18th century and even into the 19th. The « Russian Bertoldo » is associated with a rather rare phenomenon: a comic text, originating in the West, theoretically intended for people « of doubtful taste », spread simultaneously through both the popular and the elite cultures of 18th century Russia. The different social classes reacted in much the same way, and with similar ambivalence, since exposure to this particular text provoked quite severe disapproval, due to the particular mindset of conservative Russian Orthodoxy.
