The article (Love in the Time of Epidemics: Sex Trade, Social Exclusion and Satirical Literature in the 16th Century) focuses on the analysis of a selection of “antiputtaneschi” satirical texts written and published following the epidemic wave of the “French disease” that had impacted Europe from the late 15th century. Both medical knowledge and collective imagination attributed a central role to the female body in the spread of venereal disease. Consequently, this led to the stigmatization and ostracization of courtesans, as well as their forced hospitalization. The fear of contamination arising from associating with women involved in the sex trade also fueled a resurgence of misogynistic rhetorical arsenal within the satirical tradition : the parodic description of the female body, inspired by anti-Petrarchan themes, thus became enriched with references to sexually transmitted diseases. Through the study of the “lamentations” of courtesans, this article aims to reconstruct the satirical and moralizing response of 16th-century society to this epidemic phenomenon

In Renaissance Venice, the question of what should happen to the children of prostitutes preoccupied moralists and had a significant legal and professional impact on the women first involved. Initiation into the profession by the young girl’s mother was both a common practice and a literary topos. By studying a case preserved in the archives of the Avogaria di Comun, this article seeks to reconstruct the career of a courtesan, Giulia, to show how her career became part of an all-female network that came up against the power of her patrician clients.

Portamedina's Medea by Maria Luisa and Mario Santella is a 1980 rewriting of the Medea myth, a theatrical adaptation of the 19th century novel of the same name by Francesco Mastriani. It is a tragedy of motherhood in which both mothers and illegitimate daughters are the victims, in a society where laws are made by men and where honour and respectability count more than any natural ties. Faced with the impossibility of social redemption, infanticide presents itself as a necessity, as a kind of maternal euthanasia.

This work offers a historical journey through the various theatrical manifestations from the second half of the 20th century to the present day in Italy. This journey is an approach to a series of practices that move away from traditional frameworks and that opt for the experimentation of their own scenic language that Italian theater studies have tried to conceptualize through different nomenclatures (Nuovo teatro, avant-guarde, Post-avant-garde, neo-avant-garde, new spectacularity, experimental theater, postscene, etc.). The recovery of these theories will allow us to situate the contemporary theatrical scene with its possible aesthetic derivations.

As part of a study day devoted exclusively to Carlo Goldoni at the University of Nancy II in 2014, the article focuses on the decisive role played by actress Maddalena Marliani in the construction of the figures in the Corallina cycle of the Goldonian period at the Teatro Sant’Angelo, particularly between 1750 and 1753. The impact on her characters of Corallina’s personality as an actress is notorious in all the comedies of the period in which she appears, all the more so as we know the extent to which Goldoni first relies on the ‘carattere sotto gli occhi’ of the actors before inventing a character (preface to La castalda, ed. Paperini, 1755). The article sketches out the characteristics of Corallina’s figure through a horizontal reading of the two plays that frame the cycle (La Gastalda 1751 and La Locandiera, 1753), thus tracing the snippets of the actress’s dramaturgical repertoire – taking all accounts, her ‘generico’, to use a term proper to the theater dell’arte from which she emerged, before working with Goldoni. The appendix - in the form of a comparative table of recurring lines, situations and scenes in the two plays - provides concrete support for these hypotheses.
