Highlighting the centrality of translation as a tool for conveying ideas and worldviews, crucial in intercultural exchange, the article underscores the imbalances in cultural exchanges between France and Italy during the Renaissance. Moreover, it focuses on two prominent printers of the city of Ferrara: Vittorio Baldini and Benedetto Mammarello, who both printed translations of Montaigne’s works. These printers, along with some translators like Girolamo Naselli and Ercole Cato, played a fundamental role in disseminating French literature in Italy, further strengthening the bond between French and Italian culture.

This article offers a survey of Peter Kolosimo’s books published by Sugar (later SugarCo) between the mid-1960s and the early 1980s in Italy, and of their remarkable commercial success. Kolosimo’s works discussed fantastic theories such as the possibility that the earth had been visited by hyper-evolved aliens in the distant past, or that mythical advanced civilisations had existed in ancient times. His popularity ushered in the spread, in Italy, of a wider constellation of books and periodicals dealing with mysterious topics, from ufology to pseudoarchaeology and occult sciences. This article focuses on the collaboration between Kolosimo and his publisher based in Milan.

Based on an essay by Thomas Mann on the link between Michelangelo's Neoplatonism and the artist's perception of his ageing body, the article returns to texts in which a powerful senile eroticism is asserted, leading Michelangelo to confess a fundamental inability to renounce desire. This failure invites a comparison with the impossible conversion of Petrarch, who also confesses his inability to “limit his desire” in the Secretum. From then on, Michelangelo's poetry, which traditionally escapes Petrarchanism in part, as much by the choice of a language contaminated by Florentineisms as by an ostensible admiration for Dante, thus reconnects with the essence of Petrarchan poetry.

As part of a study day devoted exclusively to Carlo Goldoni at the University of Nancy II in 2014, the article focuses on the decisive role played by actress Maddalena Marliani in the construction of the figures in the Corallina cycle of the Goldonian period at the Teatro Sant’Angelo, particularly between 1750 and 1753. The impact on her characters of Corallina’s personality as an actress is notorious in all the comedies of the period in which she appears, all the more so as we know the extent to which Goldoni first relies on the ‘carattere sotto gli occhi’ of the actors before inventing a character (preface to La castalda, ed. Paperini, 1755). The article sketches out the characteristics of Corallina’s figure through a horizontal reading of the two plays that frame the cycle (La Gastalda 1751 and La Locandiera, 1753), thus tracing the snippets of the actress’s dramaturgical repertoire – taking all accounts, her ‘generico’, to use a term proper to the theater dell’arte from which she emerged, before working with Goldoni. The appendix - in the form of a comparative table of recurring lines, situations and scenes in the two plays - provides concrete support for these hypotheses.

This work focuses on Paul Veronese’s painting, The Feast in the House of Levi, which led to the artist being summoned by the Holy Office in 1573. By examining the court's minutes and the iconographic peculiarities of this representation, I attempt to demonstrate firstly that it is indeed a depiction of the Last Supper of Christ and not one of the banquets he participated in according to the Gospels. Secondly, I argue that the constituent elements of this painting do indeed carry a scandalous character. Finally, I suggest that Veronese intentionally misled the Inquisition by pretending to be naïve. This leads me to posit that, while not aligning with artists attracted to Lutheran theses, the painter was nonetheless aware of the subversive significance of his work.

This article explores a possible relationship between painting and poetry, illustrated by the work of Francesco Furini, who depicts these arts as sisters in a painting from 1616. The essay traces the evolution of this perception, from the harmony between the two art forms in antiquity to a clear distinction during the Renaissance. Later in time, the Twentieth century saw an innovative fusion between the two arts, in particular with the visual poetry of Antonia Pozzi, who combined words and images. Born in 1912, Pozzi, a poet and photographer, used the visual element to express her aesthetics, emphasizing the central role of sight in her work, evoking emotions and landscapes through rich and colorful descriptions.

«Vostro Miccielagniolo in Turchia»

At the beginning of the 16th century, Michelangelo, a citizen involved in the political life of Florence who was also an idealist cleric, displayed a reformist sensibility, albeit one that was very much imbued with Neoplatonic culture. Although as an artist and poet he gradually renounced the norm, whether humanist or Tridentine, his career led him to leave behind the codification that imposed itself on him to become the ‘uncommon’ artist that we know. How much questioning informs his work, and in particular sonnet X of his poetry collection, and to what extent does he hope for the renewal of an institution corrupted by financial interest and debauchery? How did the artist, trained in the Florentine humanist school, draw on the influences of his masters, notably Dante and Petrarch, to highlight and then denounce the abuses and excesses of a changing Church? The author draws a parallel between Rome and a modern Babylon, modelled on the Oriental cities traditionally associated with evil.

In France, between the 16th and 18th centuries, references to Italy – its language, music and customs – proved indispensable in defining the French language and music, and these references very often involved femininity or effeminacy. I examine this interdependence between Italian and femininity on the basis of five clearly identifiable cases, and I consider the critical perspectives that can be used to analyse the issues at stake.
