Portamedina's Medea by Maria Luisa and Mario Santella is a 1980 rewriting of the Medea myth, a theatrical adaptation of the 19th century novel of the same name by Francesco Mastriani. It is a tragedy of motherhood in which both mothers and illegitimate daughters are the victims, in a society where laws are made by men and where honour and respectability count more than any natural ties. Faced with the impossibility of social redemption, infanticide presents itself as a necessity, as a kind of maternal euthanasia.

This article aims to highlight the influence and the dissemination experienced by Poggio Bracciolini’s Liber facetiarum in the French literature and culture between the 15th and the 16th centuries. Along these lines, I want to reflect on the free-style reinterpretation of the Facéties made by Guillaume Tardif (1492). Through this translation, we will be able to consider the problems of disseminating and receiving a text from one linguistic context to another. Finally, although Tardif took the credit for inserting in the French language the word «facécie», it is indispensable to mention one of the main French exponents of the humanist facéties, Bonaventure des Périers who, through the Nouvelles récréations et joyeux devis, reconstructs in fact, in both the content and form, the farcical essence that animated the Poggio Bracciolini’s Facetiae.
