This paper will show that Vladimir Nabokov, who is globally considered a famous Russian writer and an acclaimed American writer, is essentially a multilingual writer. When writing he continually uses three languages: Russian, English and French. Whichever language he chooses in the first position, the other two join and feed his creative process. If the published works cannot reveal the actual operations of creation in a multilingual writing process, the documents he gathered and his correspondence retain the marks of the interacting languages Nabokov could speak. Vladimir Nabokov’s deeply multilingual works are a true challenge to his translators. Hence, how can we translate from English into French his novel, Ada or Ardor, abounding with French words and notions? Is there a way we can preserve the multilingual brilliance so characteristic of Nabokov’s works? This paper will endeavour to provide some answers to such questions

In this paper, the use of dramatic external and internal polyglossy is analysed through methodological tools provided by Dominique Maingueneau in his work on paratopia encompassing, among others, the concepts of hypo-, hyper, peri- and inter- languages. Several examples of contemporary plays including fragments in English—standard or not—and in foreign languages, discourses written in linguistic norms and off-norms (dialects, pidgin and/or idiolects) are studied along with their authors’ targets. Internal and external pluriglossy sometimes defies and defeats the concept of mutual intelligibility advocated by English speakers. In other cases, their intertwining and dialogical links enrich the playwright’s composition and meaning. The expression of identities—whether national, regional or personal—transpires from their dramatic texture. Translating these textual mosaics, including multiple languages, demands choices that are evoked and illustrated with examples in this article.

This ‘Study on John Brandane’s The Spanish Galleon (1921) — a multilingual Scottish archetypal dramatic piece’ means to explore this dramatic text produced to highlight political values and to show that it is indispensable first to grasp the text as it was written in an historical and political context before preparing for translating into a single language (French) this multilingual source-text in which the various languages imposed on the characters have each their own value. All of which enhances the author’s intention as much as that of the text. After briefly describing the languages involved in the source-text of the play in order to put forward their specific characteristics, some sets of replies are translated as mere samples to be discussed.

Our purpose is to study from a linguistic and essentially a translation perspective some theoretical problems which are produced by the translation of Spanglish, considered as an artistic and aesthetic plurilingual expression which puts in contact two major languages, American English and Spanish. We will observe that Spanglish – because of the different practices and situations in which it is expressed, but also as a result of the potential readers it is speaking to – seems to be a digest of translation problems though it does not dissuade translators but seems quite on the opposite to arouse their growing interest. We will underline the relationship between this language and orality in general and slang in particular. Spanglish is continually changing, it is in perpetual creation and constant evolution. Translation recreates this instantaneousness of Spanglish, with its spoken language vocabulary, which is temporal and transitory, fully anchored in its times and evolving with them.

Multilingual texts in Italian narratives have been favourably accepted by French publishers. Novels by authors such as Andrea Camilleri, Marcello Fois, Salvatore Niffoi, Laura Pariani, among many others, have been handled by some dedicated translators for the benefit of French readers. Some translators have made unexpected or unrivalled choices in this country where, for various reasons, has always been on the side of an unadulterated national language — however with the odd touch of slang — rather than of regional varieties. Nowadays, we can make out two major streams in the way those cross-language texts are translated — the traditional way guarantees a clear text in the French language, often at the expense of the nuances that might be present in the original Italo-dialectal text; and the innovative way meaning to put the French reader in a position similar to the Italian reader’s, often overlooking the pact between an author to their readers.

This article examines the contemporary Italian literary production characterized by plurilingualism, from the point of view of reception. This abundant narrative production, meant for an Italian Model reader, combines standard Italian with dialect. It is therefore based on a poetics of estrangement that creates a distance from the national language. More specifically, the effect produced on the source-readers consists in two continuous but opposite movements: estrangement on the one hand, familiarization on the other hand. This paper questions the possibility of recreating this effect on the French target-reader. It argues that a French patois, judiciously chosen and proportioned in accordance with the original text, makes it possible to place the target-reader in almost similar reading conditions, by recreating the crucial effect of strangeness of such texts.

It is known that translation of a foreign piece of work fits in a complicated and multi-aspect process of intercultural communication, which involves numerous factors. Response of wide audience is of the greatest interest here. It is known that text acquires its full meaning only in the context of reception, i.e., when it is understood and evaluated by the target audience, which gives the most clear reflection of interpretation of foreign culture heritage in the recipient culture. This aspect is particularly vital for studying translations of foreign cinema works into Russian language: it is known that percentage of translated films in Russian cinema repertoire is quite considerable. The research is based on translations of Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis (Welcome to the Land of Shtis) (2008) – a French film, which touched feelings of Russian audience. Results of research allow to look at the most pressing problems of movie translation through the recipient's eyes.

This article attempts to provide a reflection on both the practice and the ontology of translation through a discussion on experiences of translating two Taiwanes multilingual novels by Chen-ho 王禎和 (1940-1990) and Wu Ming-yi 吳明益 (1971-). In both novels, the two authors use a mix of various languages, Chinese Mandarin, English, Japanese and above all, Taiwanese. The strategy proposed for the translation of these texts full of linguistic plays and experiments is that of creolization. This article seeks to offer a new experimental method of translation and discuss the potential limitations that this method suggests, in order to preserve the interactions between the languages of the original text. Therefore, the very meaning of the translation that creolization aims is not so much a communicative transmission or a translation of “equivalent” contents, but the actual practice of the translation of poetics that allows for the indeterminate part of the languages themselves.

We begin this article with a short presentation of an excerpt of Umberto Eco’s well known novel Il nome della rosa. This excerpt looks like Latin but each translation –in the source or target text– is influenced by another language: the source or target language. This popularized Latin is translated in various ways by the translators that we present here.In a second step, we study another very interesting case of a linguistic creation by Eco in the first pages of Baudolino. This second excerpt is even more fascinating as the manuscript shows the linguistic doubts of the main character through crossed out words and others with different written forms… In this second case, the language still keeps Latin forms but is strongly influenced and contaminated by the languages known by the main character.

Morso di luna nova is a play by Erri De Luca intent on constructing the identity of the Naples people through the use of their dialect expressing individuality. The script is studded with parentheses—“without within”—and raises linguistic issues concerning how to translate multilingual texts. Failing to translate those parentheses—absent presence, staging the act of translation, and playing on the same other—would mean overlooking De Luca’s metacritical thinking on languages. Since we know that the characters use either their local dialect or the Italian language according to their social status and especially according to their addressees, can we suggest that this code switching, unable to prevent malapropisms, is calling for overhead projecting surtitles for the contents of parentheses?

Traduction des romans africains francophones : de la dichotomie à la triade

L’article est consacré à l’analyse de la traduction des romans des écrivains africains francophones du français vers le russe, tâche dont le défi principal est la nécessité de véhiculer l’imaginaire propre à la culture source qui est différente de celle des langues source et cible. The article deals with the analysis of translation of novels by francophone African writers from French into Russian, where the major challenge consists in reflecting the imaginary inherent in the source culture, which differs from that of both the source and target languages.

The present inquiry seeks to explore the translations of Iqbalian texts keeping in view the various challenges of the multilingual translations in a monolingual culture. Through translations of poetic texts of Iqbal –20th century poet of the Indian subcontinent – we intend to explore the connection from a multilingual culture, that of the Persian and Arab Oriental region, towards a monolingual culture, that of the French Occidental region. The central query of this paper focuses upon:- Symbols that Iqbal has used in his poetry, e.g. eagle, glow-worm, moth, etc.- Iqbalian terms that identify the concept of khudi (mastery of self), the perfect man, the vision, desire, etc.We propose to cross examine the development of interculturalism: What would be the specificities and the challenges of the translations of the iqbalian terms which possess a strong regional and religious specialty that is nevertheless multilingual? In order to deal with such questions, we are taking those poetic texts which highlight our central query.

« Introducing dialect into literature », to « give dialect its dignity again » : such is the ambition of the German naturalist playwright Gerhart Hauptmann. This principle is at work in various plays, such as The Spinners (1892) or The Rats (1911). The purpose of the present contribution is to explain the difficulties of translating a multilingual work into French, how the German text had to be rethought and which principles were applied as the French text emerged. The present analysis is more empirical than theoretical and will unfold as follows : the first step consisted in seizing which aesthetics and which ideology lied behind Hauptmann’s use of dialect ; the second step was to transpose it as closely as possible, driving me to take the French audience into account as a monolingual target, and therefore to use language registers.

This paper aims to explore the complex relationships between katharévousa, or formal Greek — a made-up language, or a compromise set up from literary works — and dimotikí, or demotic Greek. Then we will study some cases to show some of the problems translators are faced with. We will first review the circumstances that caused Greek diglossia to appear, then we will explore it by confronting the phenomenon to translated samples. The main point is to show how translators can solve the problems set by those interactions when structured by the two “languages” in a literary piece, or when popular art works make use of their pragmatic potentials.

The West Indian authors Patrick Chamoiseau and Raphael Confiant developed in their novels a hybrid writing language that merges their double culture (French and Creole), thus creating a new and meaningful language. The translation of these books represents a complex challenge, because of the numerous references to Creole languages and cultural spheres hardly transposable in another language. You would have to get around the pitfalls of both the impoverishing over-translation transposing the text in its whole in a unique language, and of the opacifying under-translation restricting access to the text as a whole. There is another transposition here: the Creole translation, growing away from the litteral meaning of the source text to recreate the sounds and rythms that are essential to Creole culture. This translation also consists in creating multilingual neologisms in the target language in order to suggest the linguistic hybridity of the original text. It is a conceivable solution to translate Creole novels without betraying them too much.

The most frequent phenomena met by translators working on Russian as a source-language are those words borrowed from Slavonic—that are not necessarily archaisms or clericalisms—, and from Ukrainian. The Slavonic language, formerly the language of academics, influenced the written language of educated scholars, and, paradoxically enough, contaminated the discourse of the lower clergy and their families, to such a point that it became the idiosyncrasy of the whole class—who used to be by and large uneducated. No equivalent can be found in French to these particular modes of speech. Ukrainian, a familiar dystopia per se, gives rise to more ordinary problems: how to deal with regionalisms, protect “local colours”, make the reader sense a “country accent”. In each and every case solutions need to be found: when reading translations in print we grow aware that in most cases such difficulties have been ignored.

This article aims to analyse the forms and functions of self-translation in mente in Amor de Baobá (compilation of stories, Lisbon, 1997; Maputo, 1998), by the Mozambican Suleiman Cassamo. Unlike the material self-translation (which is formalized in a publication, the result of translation carried out by the author of the original text into another language), the self-translation in mente is a parallel, opaque and invisible simultaneous translation that is carried out within the original work itself and that means that it is not easily detected (Tanqueiro, 2011). In Amor de Baobá, Cassamo inserts elements from Ronga language and popular formulas (undervalued by elites) to recover and value the oral tradition of semi-urban or rural Mozambican areas. In other words, Cassamo chooses to write in Portuguese, but not in a passive mode. Through a simultaneous mental translation process within the original, the European language, in Amor de Baobá, is appropriated and transformed in object of scrutiny (political, historical and cultural scrutiny). In this chapter, we will examine these strategies and their role in the reception of the message by the Portuguese speaking readers.

De A Year in the Merde à God save la France

Stephen Clarke’s novel, A Year in the Merde, published in English in 2004 is of interest to us only through its translation into French by Léon Mercadet, God save la France (2006). Turning into a text the life and misfortunes of a young English executive coming to work for a year in a Paris bank and subsequently translating it into French are a true challenge. The narrator’s experience produced in the first person gives rise to endless questions connected to the languages and cultures of both countries—they cannot be dealt with exhaustively in this paper. And this paper only means to highlight the main points, i.e. how to turn the narrative from “Engrench” into “Franglais”, never overlooking the heart of the matter: humour and mockery.

Un « paysage mental » de la médiation culturelle

The documentary Traduire is an excellent material for translation studies as well as an inspiring movie for active translators, by displaying a series of interesting speeches on the subject of literary translation in a very uncommon way.The half French half Israeli director Nurith Aviv stages the interviews in a sobre as well as subtle manner inspired by two filmmaking-theories: the “direct cinema”, which was created in the development of documentaries in the 1950s, and the neo-realism, which André Bazin founded in France concerning fiction movies.By these means Nurith Aviv creates a direct relationship between the speakers and the audience, which strongly gets to feel the joys and torments of translators at work. Its a vivid presentation of the insides of the activity of translating through pictures and sound, which offers an welcome supplement to often too theoretical linguistic studies.
