Le développement de la pratique s’accompagne de la nécessaire réflexion autour des enjeux que pose la présence du texte traduit au sein d’une mise en scène originale. Ces enjeux sont d’ordre traductifs et conditionnent la pratique du surtitreur-traducteur mais ils concernent aussi le spectacle lui-même, dans le rapport scène/salle qu’il établit et dans l’univers esthétique qu’il propose. Longtemps cantonné à une position périphérique, tant physiquement que symboliquement, le surtitrage peut également être envisagé selon un approche intégrative, visant à l’assumer pleinement – voire à le revendiquer – comme élément du dispositif théâtral. Surtitling is increasingly widespread to allow the circulation of theatrical performances beyond the linguistic borders of their creation. The development of the practice is accompanied by the necessary reflection on the stakes posed by the presence of the translated text within an original staging. These issues are of a translational nature and condition the practice of the surtitler-translator, but they also concern the performance itself, in the scene/room relationship it establishes and the aesthetic universe it proposes.
