Traduire et retraduire Maeterlinck : un exemple en langue allemande

In this paper, we focus on the work of Stefan Gross, German translator and expert on Nobel Prize-winning Belgian author (1911), Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949). Why did Gross retranslate the symbolist author's “first period” when Maeterlinck was so satisfied with the work of his official German-speaking translator, Friedrich von Oppeln-Bronikowski? How did Gross’ background, both personal and academic influence his work? We had the opportunity to ask Stefan Gross directly, as he welcomed us to his home in Aachen, a town located in the so-called Dreiländereck he cherishes.

This article reports on an experiment conducted in a literary translation course as part of a Master's degree programme in Japanese language and civilisation. Three students, out of a class of ten, used ChatGPT and/or DeepL to produce automated translations, and attempted to improve them through prompts and post-editing. My aim here was to observe whether these tools can benefit translation work in any way, and if so, under which conditions. The translated piece was a part of a short story by Kajii Motojirô, Under the Cherry Trees (1928). After reviewing some of the difficulties in the text and comparing the successes and failures of translators with and without software assistance, I take a closer look at how the students made use of prompts and carried out the post-editing work.

Un « paysage mental » de la médiation culturelle

The documentary Traduire is an excellent material for translation studies as well as an inspiring movie for active translators, by displaying a series of interesting speeches on the subject of literary translation in a very uncommon way.The half French half Israeli director Nurith Aviv stages the interviews in a sobre as well as subtle manner inspired by two filmmaking-theories: the “direct cinema”, which was created in the development of documentaries in the 1950s, and the neo-realism, which André Bazin founded in France concerning fiction movies.By these means Nurith Aviv creates a direct relationship between the speakers and the audience, which strongly gets to feel the joys and torments of translators at work. Its a vivid presentation of the insides of the activity of translating through pictures and sound, which offers an welcome supplement to often too theoretical linguistic studies.
