Looking the other way in via Fani: Reframing Resistance in the Translation of Barbara Balzerani’s Compagna luna

Compagna luna (Feltrinelli 1998/Derive Approdi 2013) is a complex text in which Barbara Balzerani meditates on her role in the Armed Struggle fought by the Red Brigades in Italy from 1972 to 1984 and the effect this and her subsequent imprisonment had on her. Balzerani elaborates a series of narratives that construct the Armed Struggle as a necessary political and military response to the situation in Italy in the early 1970s. Her framing of the events she recounts deliberately excludes details that would have been known to many of her target readers in 1998. In translating this text, the author of this paper understands these framings-by-exclusion as ‘silences’ that resist the public representations of the Armed Struggle in Italian society. This paper explores how these resistant silences might be made ‘audible’ to readers of an English translation in a way that reinforces rather than undermines Balzerani’s resistant representations of history.
