In the novel Breakfast On Pluto, Patrick McCabe’s main character is an Irish transvestite named Patrick Pussy Braden living in 1970s Northern Ireland in the context of the Troubles. The protagonist’s own troubled gender has inevitable repercussions on the translation of voice in French. This essay studies Braden’s narration via the question of mental and gendered instability, the way others consider him/her and the impact of this judgment; Bakhtin’s definition of the grotesque also casts a decisive light on the story and the character. This study reflects the analysis that goes along with the work of the translator and helps explain some of the choices made in the French version, most importantly Braden’s feminine voice.
